HAZARD COMMUNICATIONS TRAINING PROGRAMS The following training programs, as of March. 1984. were reviewed by the Health and Safety Education Department and were found to be suitable for Introductory-level hazard communications training and informational efforts within Gulf. 1. Material Safety Data Sheets for Gulf Products. A 12 minute slide/tape program, produced by Gulf Oil Products Company, which takes the student on a guided tour of the Gulf Material Safety Data Sheet. 2. Working With Chemicals and Your Health. A series of four individual slide/tape programs, each approximately 15 minutes in length, produced by the National Safety Council, covering the topics of: a. General Concepts - The program provides information on chemicals, how they work and the effects they may have on the human body. Terms such as hazard, toxicity and dose are defined. Viewers are told how chemicals can enterthe body and the forms the chemicals can take. The program concludes with a brief review of personal protective equipment and the precautions workers should take.1 b. Acids and Bases - This program defines acids and bases as well as demonstrates how they are used throughout industry. The program shows viewers what precautions to take when handling these materials and what to do in an emergency situation. c. Solvents - Solvents are liquids which are used todissolve other materials. Viewers are shown that solvents can be hazardous depending on their use, toxicity level and concentration. Chlorinated and non-chlorinated solvents are discussed, as well as the proper personal hygiene practices to follow when using these chemicals. d. Toxic Metals - This program explains how metals may enter the body in the form of particles or fumes by inhalation, ingestion or absorption through the skin. Detailed explanations cover such toxic metals as lead, mercury, cadmium and nickel, as well as the signs of poisoning from these metals. Accident prevention and emergency procedures are outlined. Each of the four programs has its own student `handout' booklet and an instructor's guide. 3. What You Don't Know Can Hurt You. A 3/4-inch videocassette produced by ITS Corporation, 21 minutes in length. This training program is designed to inform employees of the potential harmful effects of chemicals. The program examines the nature of toxic effects, the dose/response relationship, routes of entry of toxic substances into the human body, and describes the various possible acute and chronic effects from exposure to hazardous chemicals. An Instructor's manual, discussion guide and student exams are included in this complete training package. Please recognize that new hazard communications training programs are under development by Gulf as well as vendors, and that the above listed programs are the best of the available programs reviewed to date. -69- VEV-148982 Also recognize that these training programs do not constitute all of that is necessary in a comprehensive hazard communications program.
