COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT CALL REPORT NO. 72-70
BAXTER TRAVENOL LABORATORIES MORTON GROVE, ILLINOIS
Date of Call:
October 10, 1972
For Travenol Labst Mr. H. Gajewski, Technical Director
For Monsanto:
C. W. Cook P. R. Graham
Objective:
To review Santicizer 334F evaluations
Summary;
Baxter Travenol is entering Phase II of their search for a re placement for DOP in blood bags. Santicizer 334F is still the leading candidate. In addition to the H2O extraction "problem" with S-334F, Baxter has found S-334F systems to blush after steam autoclave sterilization. DOP also blushes but the clarity returns in a shorter time period than S-334F. They will begin evaluation of S-334F Special immediately. Based on the improved H2O resistance of S-334FS, a definite improvement in blushing is anticipated.
The pressure appears to be on Baxter to qualify a replacement candidate.
Details:
.
No processing or performance (other than H2O resistance) stands in the way of S-334F use in blood bags. The Union-Camp polymeric,

being evaluated side by side with our product, has exhibited a
narrower GPC range. However, uniformity from batch to batch
has varied. Baxter is still very much opposed to the use of
BHT and other antioxidants in the blood bag.
,
Their test for blushing is to autoclave film for 1 hour at 235F. and observe the time required for the film to clarify. It takes four to six hours for S-334F to become clear as opposed to two to three hours for DOP.
