Walter, Davenport CONFIDENTIAL RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING, DAVENPORT WORKS, MAY - JUNE, 1964 May and June meetings of the Davenport Industrial Hygiene Committee were combined into a single meeting June 11, 1964, at 12:30 p.m. in the small dining room of the main cafeteria. Attending the meeting were the following members: Mssrs. 'B. T. Evans, G. W. Walter, J. H. Lowry, W. C. Harvey, C. L. Huey, R. G. Small, Geo. J. Myers, B. D. Kent, R. G. Wardrop, and Dr. A. W. Shafer. Recent changes to the hooding of the 2020 furnace in Remelt have been evaluated. Results indicate the operation now is well under the threshold limits for cadmium and lithium hydroxide. A shop order is being written to cover the cost of spraying the scalper ducts with a sound deadening material. This procedure was recommended by an outside concern to reduce the noise in that area to a safe limit of approximately 80 decibels. .pi A bulletin issued by Mr. Bonney concerning marinite hazard Sr 4963 4 RlhST TO IN USA. -2- is being routed to the interested parties. The firm of Kirk and Blum have visited the plant and are to submit recommendations as to proper sawing and handling of this material. Dr. Shafer suggested that a protective cream be used, at least temporarily, to protect exposed areas of the workmen's bodies from marinite dusts. Mr. Kent and Dr. Shafer will investigate the protective creams available to determine which is best in reducing irritation. The Kirk and Blum representative visited the paint line coater house to check the ventilating system there. It was suggested that fresh air be brought into the room from a high level and exhausted from a low level in the opposite end of the room. Mr. Walter volunteered to discuss the coater house situation with Mr. H. W Green in order to accelerate a solution to this problem which has been troublesome for such a long period of time. Mr. Kent has surveyed most of the tanks and pits on the plant site and will issue a report in the near future concerning precautionary measures to be taken before entering any hazardous areas found. Action is being taken to reduce noise levels in some ARD 044146 areas. Other trouble areas such as the trimmers are difficult to muffle. The only practical approach to these areas apparently is to provide suitable ear muffs. Samples of muffs are being obtained from Cleveland Works that have proven successful there, and others will be obtained from the manufacturer for our evaluation. -3- Mr. Wardrop was appointed chairman of a committee to activate the Audiometric program for Davenport. Mr. Kent and Dr. Shafer will also serve on this committee'. The committee will report on the status of this program at the next meeting. An aeroator has been installed at the number 2 well to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from the well water. A small amount of soda ash will be added to the water to serve as a pH control, water sweetner, and to further reduce the odor. Chlorine addition, it is hoped, can now be reduced to a more economical level. Chlorinators in other parts of the plant may be eliminated if this proves successful. A fuel oil having 1.25% sulfur, as compared to the present 1%, will be used in Remelt during the summer months. This will result in a considerable savings during the period of a year.
