JOINT MEETING WITH DUCT COWGTTEE
The Health and Safety Cconlttee waa invited to Jointly aeet with the Duet CoMttittee to dlacuaa environaental atudiea of inatalled fiber glaas duct linera and ayrtaaa to determine to what degree, if any, they pro duced fiber glaaa in air of reapirable aize through fiber glaaa eroaion. Thia ia a continuation of the fiber glaaa duct eroaion atudiea recently collated by Kettering Laboratory under laboratory conditiona. The varioua factora aueh aa denaity of inaulation, linear air velocity in duct, length of tiaa aince inatallation, quality of inatallera' work manship and aany othera were diacuaaed.
The Health and Safety Coanittee atudied theae various factors and de veloped a study proposal which would pexait an evaluation of duet ero sion under conditions which night yield, on the one hand, the greatest degree of erosion and, on the other, the least degree of erosion. This proposal was aubaitted to the Duct Ccanlttee for their approval which was obtained. The proposal ia aat forth In Attachaent #1. The Duct Coaaittee will select, using the criteria set forth in the proposal, the five sites where the environaental studies will be ecccnpliahed. They will notify the Health and Safety Conittee by August 1, 1968, who will then request littering laboratory to subait a study proposal for con
sideration by both coandttees.

REVIEW or DRAFT OF TEXT FOR THE NIKA NEWS
,On June 3 Mr. Aabrose M. Walsh requested our connittee to review draft ,text he had prepared relating to activities of our cosmlttee. On June 10
I sent this draft text to all our connittee for their review and consents with a request to forward their consents to Mr. Walsh, hoping that doing so would facilitate consideration of this setter. The nature of the con sents were such that final iapleaentation of the review bad to await our eooalttee seating. It was decided that publication in the NDA NEWS of our coomittee's activities was desirable and at an early date. In dis cussing the various cosasents which had been sade by aesbers of our ccmsittee, it was agreed that Or. Konzen's recosaendatlons as sade in the attached letter were acceptable to those present and Mr. Walsh, who was also present, was so advised and urged to begin publication at the earliest date incorporating all of Or. Kcnzen's recosaendatlons into his final text.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES DURING THE INSTALLATION OT FIBROUS GIA5S PTSULATIWO MATERIALS - Research Proposal
In the January issue of the Journal of Occupational Medicine, J. Leroy Balzer, M.S., an associate of W. Clark Cooper, M.O., School of Public Health, Uhiversity of California in Berkeley, had an article published entitled "Industrial Hygiene Por Insulation Workers." It quantitsted the asbestos exposures of the insulation worker but did not slailarly quantitate the fiber glass exposures to these saaa workers, although it did point out that fiber glass aade up alaost half of the insulation being used. Or. Cooper was asked to prepare a proposal for the Health and Safety Coanittee's consideration for quantitating the fiber glass exposures of the insulation workers. The proposal was received and distributed to the Health and Safety connittee neabers for their review prior to this Meeting. At the nesting, It was the unanimous opinion of the coaBittee that it should be proposed to the HIMA Board to recoanend that those H2MA nenber co^anies in fiber glass Manufacturing sponsor the proposed research as a IDA project which is vital to their inter ests. The research proposal is attached.

I. GENERAL
This is a follow-on study to the duct erosion study recently performed by the Kettering Laboratory under laboretory conditions. The various factors which sight effect fiber glass duct erosion were considered. The environmental study was to determine, if poesible, quantitative differences in fiber glass erosion between installed systems which would produce the greatest end the least fiber glass erosion and the amount of respirable fiber glass in sir produced, by etch.
U. CRITERIA FOR TEST SITE SELECTION
Test site selection will be aecoevllsbed by the Duct Committee using the following general and specific criteria:
A. General Criteria
Since it was the purpose of the investigation to determine ero sion effect on fiber glass coming into contact with the duct air stream, it was decided only to consider uncoated systems and systems in which thare was not an alectrostatic precipitator filter aystem incorporated. Also, it was fait desirablt to ineludt a steel duct system as a control.
B. Specific Criteria
1. Steel Duct Sita
A site which baa an installation five or more years old with a duet velocity of 2000 linear feet per minute or less will be selected.
2. Duct System Sites
a. A site anticipated to favor duct erosion will be selected. This Installation will be five or more years old, low dansity Insulation will have bean used, and the duct air velocity will be 2000 linear feet per minute or more.
b. A site anticipated not to favor duct erosion will be selected. This Installation will be six months to one year old, high density insulation will have been used, and the duet tlx velocity will be 1900 linear feet per minute or leas.
3. Duet Liners Bites
Two sites will be selected using the criteria as set forth for duct system sites above.
