Schaaf Potential Future Status of Asbestos-Containing Materials As we indicated in a previous letter, we have undertaken a survey of all Ford suppliers to determine whetheror -not we face possible future problems of availability of asbestos--containing materials. ': Attached is a copy of th letter, the "S-M" and "M" number materials involved and the suppliers of these materials. These are for your information. . ! Product Planning & Research r 8005 0374 Ford Motor Company The American Road Dearborn.Michigan 48121 August 21, 1972 Subject: Asbestos Containing Materials and Parts In a recent telephone conversation, a supplier of asbestos- filled polypropylene advised us that because of the effect of certain regulations issued under the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, it plans to discontinue production of this material. Subsequent inquiries .indicate that at least three other producers of this specific material have made the same decision. ' . ^his has caused us some concern regarding -the continuing availability of other materials and parts, such as gaskets, which contain asbestos. For this reason, we are attempting to survey all suppliers of these materials to Ford Motor Company. Specifically, we are seeking answers to the following questions. . *1 _ Within your own manufacturing operations, are you aware of any conditions which would cause you to discontinue the production of asbestos' containing materials or parts? _ If your product is processed further by another concern, such as die cutting of gaskets, do you anticipate that it will be able to continue its production? Is your source of asbestos able to guarantee to you that it will be able to continue to supply you?
