Gentlemen; Reference is made to our communication of November 17, 1969, and our request therein for your comments as to whether or not SPI'should comment on the USDA proposed amendments to its Meat Inspection Regulations and, if so, what sort of recommendations should be made to the Department of Agriculture. In response to our most recent letter, we received very few comments from Committee members on this subject , However, due to the substantial concern expressed by several of the parties vitally interested in this proposal., and in light of the fact that, as you are ail now aware, Mr. R, H. Philbeck has retired as Chief of the Technical Services Division's Laboratory Branch, creating a possibility that a new per sonality might change existing procedures for approving packaging ma.teria.Ls, we have undertaken to draft a set of comments for possible submission to the Department by SPI, ASI-PR 0000655 November 26, 1969 Page Two We apologize for the delay in sending you the enclosed draft, but some of the information incorporated in the comments was not available to us until the early part of this week. In any event, we would like to express our particular appreciation to Mr. F. W. Greenough, of W,, R. Grace and Company, Mr. Bill Westveer of The Dow Chemical Company, and Mr. Charles Spiegel of Continental Can Company for their very helpful and informed comments on the Department's proposal. We should also point out that the draft will be editorially revised before being submitted to the Department as a formal filing on December 12. 1969. If each of you will now carefully review the draft and let us nave any suggested revisions, deletions, or additions thereto by no later than December 10, we will then be in position to make a timely filing with the USDA.
