Environmental Research Foundation 231 Nassau Street P.O. Box 3541 Princeton, NJ 08543-3541 P`J* (609) 683-0707 April 23, 1990 Mr. Rex Carr 412 Missouri Ave. East St. Louis, IL 62201 Dear Mr. Carr, In issue #171 of Rachel's Hazardous Waste News (a weekly publication, which I edit), I quoted at length from your legal brief about fraudulent dioxin studies. I am enclosing a copy of the newsletter for your files. Many people have indicated how appreciative they are of the work you have done on this issue. However, I have had one serious complaint from William Gaffey, formerly an employee of Monsanto. Mr. Gaffey charges that I have been unfair to him because I quoted from your brief. He seems to be saying there is no basis whatsoever for your claims about him or his work, that he was not involved in studying dioxin exposures in the Nitro plant. I have today written Mr. Gaffey a letter asking him to clarify what he means. I don't feel I yet understand exactly what he is-saying. I feel I must also ask you what is the basis is for your remarks about Mr. Gaffey. If he was dragged into this by mistake, I should tell my readers that. Please help me understand the issues better. I'm enclosing a copy of Mr. .Gaffey's complaining letter and of my response. Thank you for 'any further light you can throw on this matter. Sincerely yours, Peter Montague C00314
