Ethyl Gasoline Corporation Detroit, Michigan Gentlemen: We have done a little experimental work during the past season in connection with drying hay and grain by forcing air through the material to be dried. In our experimental work we used gasoline engines, the same type as we use in our small tractors, and in this work speeded up the drying process slightly by making use of the waste heat from the engine to raise the air temperature about five degrees. In most of the cases we allowed the exhaust gases from the engine to pass through the hay or grain along with the drying air. To give you an idea of proportions I might state that the power unit burns about one gallon of fuel per hour. The fan delivers, when drying hay, about 15,000 cubic feet of air per minute, and the total drying period extends over an operating time of 100 to 200 hours, representing a gasoline consumption of between 100 to 200 gallons of fuel. In the case of drying hay approximately twenty tons of dry hay is involved. Since this hay or grain is finally consumed either as animal feed or as human food, we are interested in knowing whether or not the products of combustion when burning ethyl gasoline are likely to have any bad effects. Up to date we have had no reports which would indicate possible trouble, but if you have any experience along this line we would appreciate very much receiving your comment on this subject.
