Valspar Corporation laid utilised RT-530-D purchased in the fora of lacquer chips from tha RBH Diaparaiona Company, for economy raaaona Valspar daeidad to make their own diaparaiona of dtj pigmente in lacquer and RT-530-D was found to ha tod light for tha Hudacn Motor Car Maroon. Ona lot of Harmon'a IfT-l waa found aatiafaotory for this p&fpose and served aa atandard in thla work. A brief laboratory atudy ti made to Increaee tha depth of BT-530-B* maintaining intenaity and ita deairable working propartiaa.
A vary limited variable atudy waa made on RT-53C-D (A) cowering primarily tha uao of firat and second component aooeaaory agents. It waa found that tha substitution of ,,Lltheao^, Aoid BOM for 1C$ of the "Napbrthanil" B8 gave a product of approximately equal depth to Harmon'a MT-l with good intenaity but at a eaorifiee of tho relatively good bleed of RT-530-D. To inturo good diapersion, thia product had to bo high speed pulverised.
After viewing panels, the customer placed a trial order for 250#* tho aami-worke and plant development will be covered separately.
Meanwhile further work waa carried on in the laboratory in an attempt to regain the bettor blood of RT-530-D maintaining the dark maaetone, This work will bo covered in a report on ART-590-D.
Optimum depth of maeeione waa obtained with tha 10j aubatitution of BOH and further increases tended to light the color. This variable eon bo wood for abading purpoaea by reducing the amount of BOH and replasing with "Naphthanil" B8 if tho color ia too dark.
The aeoaaeory agente used ware beta-hydroxy-napbthoic aeid (BOH|, ortho* ohlor-para*nitroaniline (OCPHA), 5 nitro-2-andno aniaola (5H0a-2NHa-An) and math** nitro-para-aniaidine (MNFA) Ortho-chlor-para-nitroaniline and 5 nitro*2 amino** aniaola. whan used ia amounts up to 1<# of thw TOf on tho original RT-530-B formula, did not affect the tinctorial properties.
Further inereaaea in depth of RT-5B-D may be obtained by uetbgmetanitro-para-aniaidina as an accessory agent, or increasing the caustic seis in tho coupling by eliminating the soda ash. It should bo noted that both these wariablaa give dullness also. B Wood Rosin may be substituted for the napthonie aeid in RT-573-D *o increase the depth slightly.

The laboratory samples ware submitted to the paint laboratory for evaluation in the Valspar laoquer vehiele. The reaulta are recorded in the Faint Laboratory Memo's #148 of 12/31/48 and 1/26/48 submitted by t. O'Haill.
