' Dear Charles: Thanks for the courtesy of sending me the copy of the letter prepared by Dr. Hansen to send to the President of the United States. Unfortunately, I do not feel that I can take any hand whatever in editing this letter. The sentiments expressed in it are those of Doctor Hansen, and as such are satisfactory to me. As you will have seen, the paper that I wrote and sent to you was based upon my official and scientific judgment, and as such I take it that it was not regarded as relevant at present by Dr. Hansen. I had my own doubts about it, and so 1 am entirely agreeable to his attitude. I personally do not see the point of the reassurances of our loyalty to the ideas of the President for to me, the only issue is - what will come of environmental protection during the months to come. I have most sincere doubts about the President's ideas and his likely activities at present, and in the near future. I believe that he is lost personally and politically and that it may be as necessary as it might be difficult, to maintain and then resume the policies and purposes of environmental protection via the government of the United States. I find myself really fearful that the government will attempt to set aside Environmental Control and move ahead with the military, governmental and commercial affairs of the United States without further change in, and hindrance to, these affairs through environmental efforts to control the associated threats to various aspects of the national life. I am in favor, at this time, of letting Dr. Hansen's letter go to the President for what it is worth. Furthermore, I think we should continue to be behind, and in support of, all reasonable efforts to improve our environmental situation in every way possible during the present and hear at hand difficult period of watchful waiting.
