Kehce Kettering Laboratory University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, Ohio Dear Dr. Kehoe: One of our materials which appears to have a strong potential in the food packaging field is a Ter Polymer consisting of copolymerizing vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and diethylmaleate. There is a sufficient background of data on the innocuous effects of both vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride polymers to allow these materials to be acceptable to The Food and Drug Administration for food packaging purposes. The Food and Drug Administration questions the presence of polymerized diethyl-naleate ani insists on knowing whether or not any of this polymer is extracted in usual food stuffs. If it is found to be extracted in appreciable q u antities then feeding studies of the chronic type may be required. We are not prepared at this time to proceed with chronic feeding studies of this material but are interested in having the extraction studies requested by The Food and Drug Administration performed. This as you know consists of 30 day extraction in water, lard oil, and dilute acetic or citric acid. Is your Laboratory prepared to perform studies of this type, and if sc, could you do it at once? If you are prepared to do so then I shall want to discuss the problem in more detail with either yourself or some of your personnel from the stand point of methods to be used and approximate cost.
