MEDICAL DEPARTMENT FPG Meeting Presentation April 12, 1976 MEMO TO THE FILE: The Abex and FPG meeting which was to be held in Winchester last week was canceled by mutual agreement. George Romine and Don Rennie would like very much for me to put together a 20-minute presentation for all of the employees on three shifts. Presumably this would be given three times, that is, once for each shift. Don Bennie doesn't want me to present everything with a rosy glow, nor with a doomsday pitch. In essence, what they felt I should say would be some comments regarding the precautions that we have undertaken to protect the men, and the measures which the employees are expected to follow for their own health, safety or well being. I would also get into something regarding a history of our protective equipment, the devices which they have been recommended to use, etc. I could also come up with some sort of conclusion based upon our chest x-ray program to date in Winchester. I told D.K.Rennie that I could work up such a presentation for the employees. I even suggested that videotape be considered so that this could be shown to future groups of new employees. Should any modifications be necessary, the videotape could be changed or redone. He had not considered this and thought it was another worthwhile suggestion. I pointed out to Don Rennie that we know there is a statistical relationship between asbestos exposure and smoking. As such, I told him that I could not avoid the matter of tobacco in my presentation. I pointed out that I told him and others on more than one occasion that we should remove the cigarette vending machines and not sell any cigarettes on the premises. I feel that continued sale of them via vending machines is incomprehensible. CCB:np C. C. Blackwell, Jr., M.D Medical Director SPNY 003722 SCF-ABEX-1905 ABEX-172
