Richard asked Mr. Mitendorf to make us aware of the CPSC's action on benzene yesterday. CPSC decided to request comments from companies-marketing products which contain benzene in quantities greater than 0.1%. Three categories of companies are being asked to respond: 1) Companies marketing consumer products prior to January 1-, 1979 ^ which contained benzene in quantities greater than 0.1%. 2) Companies marketing consumer products since January 1, 1979 which contain benzene in quantities greater than 0.1%. 3) Companies planning to market consumer products which contain benzene in quantities greater than 0.1%. It is estimated that this should appear in the Federal Register- in about 45 days. Sherwin Insurance Asbestos Record-Keeping Bob Beber has asked that I respond to your recent memorandum. As I understand it from my conversations with you. Risk Management will no longer be maintaining its own separate and distinct files on asbestosis cases. Instead, the files which you now have will either be integrated into the Legal Department files on the fourth floor or, alternatively, will be closed and sent to storage. I believe the assistance of Karen Williams will be most helpful in making this determination. As I understand it. Risk Management will continue to keep statistical information on the underlying cases. This includes a running chronological log of the cases as they are received, the weekly and monthly statistical reports on the number of cases pending, settled and dis posed without payments, and the breakdown of legal fee payments where possible as they are allocated among the individual cases.
