I v 11 March 4, 1969 Mr. Leon A. Woods Depcrtwcnt ol' Fioh and Qttine Pesticide Investigations 9u7 Jedawith Prlve kt ere went o, California 99^19 Peor Mr. Woods* J,In reply to your letter of February 2 I have enclosed a topic showing'the general physical properties? of our Aroclors. At the bottom of thle table I have added the results determined In oral toxicity studies with rata and the minimum lethal done of the Aroclors when applied to the shaven ekin of rabbits. You will notice that there ie a difference In the wanner In which the ample Is administered due to the physical form of the ample, its viscosity, solubility, etc. Ve believe that these data show that the Aroclors are not erlouaiy toxic from the standpoint of acute single exposure. A second enclosure is a reprint describing the results of chronic inhalation experiments on two of the Aroclors. This work hoe led to the establishment of a threshold limit value of 3.0 milligrams per cubic m^ter for Aroclor 1242 and 0.5 milligram per cubic meter for Aroclor 12$4. Perhaps I should point out that our designation of the Aroclors by numbers indicates the parent material and the degree of chlorine. For example th 1200 series are biphenyls chlorinated k2$jto various percentages. Thus, Aroclor 1242 is biphenyl chlorinated to the extent of Aroclor 12t>4 is biphenyl chlorinated to i>4^. The series beginning with the numerals 24 and 44 are DSW 018414 4l* STLCOPCB4004958 Mr. Leon A. Woods -2- March 4, 1969 blends of chlorine ted biphenyls end chlorinated trlphenyls. The ^4 scries are chlorine ted trlphenyls. All of the Aroclere are practically insoluble in water. For example Aroelor 124? ia soluble in water at 2J>C only to the ej'tent of 203 plus or minus 10 parte per billion; Aroelor 1248 106 plus or minus 14 ppt end Aroelor 1254 50 plus or minus 2 ppb. Obviously increasing the chlorine content decreases the solubility of the material. , If I can be of any further assistance# please let me know. Sincerely, .EPWjcJb Enclosures Elmer P.
