Johnson, Bowman & Knox Serial Number 178,352 Filed December 6, 1937 For:Method of Producing White Lead Dear Mr. Laist; In connection with the above-identified applica tion, we are enclosing herewith two copies of an Office action dated April 22, 1939. Very truly yours, Enclosures. Pw*C0000fl*95 N11451.01 p Y Division 56 Roon 4725 REB/ecc Paper No. 4 DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE United States Patent Office WASHINGTON Mailed April 22, 1939 Please find below a communication from the EXAMINER in charge of this application. Applicant: Gunnard E. Johnson CONWAY P. COE et al. Commissioner of Patents. Serial No. 178,352 Filed December 6, 1937 For: Method of Producing AMENDt.ffiNT DUE October 22. 1939 White Lead Responsive to amendment filed November 7, 1938. Claims 1, 3, 6 to 10 and 12 to 22 have been cancelled. Claims 2, 4. 5 and 11 are rejected as based on an insuffi cient disclosure. The step of excess carbonation of the catholyte does not appear to be defined in the specification. Excess over what? Claims 2. 4. 5 and 11 are rejected as unpatentable over Johnson et al, of record. This reference clearly teaches the advantages of controlling bicarbonate ion concentration in the anolyte. To do this by a known method of adjusting the bicar bonate ion concentration is not seen as invention. The step used has been pointed out in Rosenstein. It appears that in stead of controlling the degree of carbonation of the catholyte, the control is made at the anolyte; no unexpected advantage is seen in this. No claim is allowed.
