EV SOLVES
PERPLEXING
CORROSION
PROBLEM
The substitution of toad Kid baUaty-oowtrtd l*fl truck for pot powered by a propane fueled inter nal combustion engine has solved number of perplexing corrosion end environmental problem* at Aberdeen Tricot Inc.. * knitting company in Aberdeen, N.C.
Company president, Glenn Fogtomen. reporu that the fottawiry fact* bee*me evident toon after bn piart began oprraung:
Knitting needle*, machinery pru end other plaid equipment were nesting. Expensive maintenance end pert* replacement. were required to keep Ik plant operating. A tc employees n suffering from mnor fames end miner eye imuuon. Production end **le* weft de creasing due to uqurpmem do*tine and * lot* in productive man hour*. The solution to the problem* sB of which wen found to W related to the me of propane fueled lift truck, n an interesting case halory of a search for the source and effects of pollutants that can develop under certain conditions in the controlled atmosphere of an industrial plant. Closely controlled temperature acd humidity conditions are critical it^siixfflcsti for the production of quality Incot fabnc At Aberdeen TncoC the temperature is kept at 7t to SO degrees Fahrenheit. Humidi fier* automatically maintain a rda* tm humidity of M per cent. The temperature and humidity, combined with exhaust fume* from a propane-fueled fork lift truck, acre m thought to be causing the corrosion, rye imUtsoo and nausea problem* Since they were moat evi dent in ;hc production area of the plant where the truck operated. Step* wrt therefore Ukea to re place the truck's carburetor, tune the engine, and change the fuel tank*, thinking that tome foreign elements may have been placed in the tank*. Those preventive measures pro duced no effect and the problems continued to worsen. The corrosive condition*, evident in formations on door latches and other plant equip ment, became critical when they de veloped on the hundreds of deticau knitting needles attached to the 14-
foot long needle ban of about half of the 14 knitting machines in the plant. The corrosive attacks were particu
larly aggressive uhen the machine* were stopped to change a knitting pattern The needles became cor roded before the knitting operation
could begin satin. Corroded needle* prevent yarn from traveling through
the knifing rone. An estimated 15,000 was spent to
replace rusting needles during a (wo month period. In addition, produc tion time was also lost due to ma chinery downtime required to change the needle*.
With these combined (scion be coming more and more deinmental
to plant production and talcs volume as well ci employee health and mor ale. the company president searched for solutions to the problem.
Since the problem only existed ra
the production area and not in the adyotmng plant office. attention
turned to what was first believed to be the source of the problems the propane-fueled bft truck. Fumes emitted from the truck operating m the dosed environment of (be plant produced an abnormally high con centration of rntrogen to (be atmo sphere. When the tutrogen was mixed with water vapor continuous ly circulated by the humidifiers and then combined with the heated air during winter month*, the nitrogen caused a chemical reaction that re sulted ib the formation of mtnc aod
mist which is highly corrosive to most metal*.
It was also concluded that the tw ine aod mist also was the pollut ant that uhimstdy caused the nausea and eye irritation. These (wo cn-
dronmental problems were attri
buted to two nitric aod-basad poi sonous gate*; nitric oxide, which la formed when nitric acid combine! with metal, and nitrogen dioxida, which It formed when nitric acid combines with oxygen. The situation
at Aberdeen Tricot was unique be cause the nitrogen dioxide was re acting with the pretence of mois ture to the atmosphere to form more nitric acid, thus generating a contin
uous cycle of highly corrosive and toxic conditions as lone as the heat ing season lattcd. Caroline fewer 4 Light representatives recommended that an electric fork bft truck re place the props ne fueled vehicle.
Samples of (he oily mist tad rml from tbc plant equipment were taken
to be chemically analyeed by an out side chemical laboratory. The testa showed that about f.5 ppm nitric aod was present tn the air ia the knitting room.
It was learned that propane can contain sulfur which can be
in the truck engine and result in sul furic acid fumes being emitted inte the air of the krutune room They were therefore assured that protect of sulfuric acid fume*, plus nitric *64 fume*, could promote the high rate of machinery rusting.
Based on this combined Aberdeen Tncot prudent Foglemee
ordered a lead aod battery-powered fort bft truck as a replacement for
the propane fueled vehicle. During the 11 month* (be lead acid batterypowered fork bft truck has been M operation, the plant has experienced no noticeable corrosion action and there have been no further inci dents of nausea or rye imuuon.
