October 30, 1929 Mr. A. E, Mittnacht', Ethyl Gasoline Corp., 25 Broadway, Hew York City. Dear Mr. Mittnacht: In the course of our experimental work of the last several years we have worked out certain notions which, if they apply equally as well to man, are of the utmost Importance in the understanding of the nature of lead poisoning. How to work these things out on men becomes a matter of some difficulty, and from time to time I have found it necessary to expend money in pro viding ourselves with suitable subjects which we can maintain in the laboratory under properly controlled conditions. This money has, I "believe, always been charged against a special account, Ho. 249. How it is impossible to make an adequate estimate of what amount should be set aside for that purpose, and it seems to me that It would be desirable if in the future we in cluded these cases under Laboratory Expense,.for, with all due respect for these subjects, they constitute for our purposes experimental animals and they should be charged against the same fund that supplies us with experimental animals. The cause for this notation at this time is that I have found another suitable- subject whom I would like to follow .for a period of some months. During this period of time it will be necessary for this man to be in the laboratory every day and he can not, therefore, hold down other work# We shall have to pay him enough to cover his expenses during the period of th experiment land"I should like to have your permission to do this and to count the cost against our laboratory expenses. It is only occasionally that v/e find a inan of the type that makes a good experimental subject for us and I should like to be so situated that X could pick up such individuals from time to time as it happens to be brought to m f attention. If this is Agreeable to you I will simply see that his money is paid out of Miss Johnson's petty cash funds, and this simply be charged against the fund for experimental supplies. I think you will see at once that this is really the pro per place to put this charge, since this is just as much a part of our experimentation as is the purchase of ex perimental animals; Please let me know whether this will be satisfactory, or whether you disapprove of it either as a matter of bookkeeping or as a matter of Sincerely yours, KE 0000677
