Darby The increased emphasis on air pollution problems has caused a shift in development research in the coatings industry toward water-based systems. For adhesive or flexible coating purposes a water soluble or miscible plasticizer is often required, and glycerin or other polyols are generally used. These materials act as-humectants and often limit the utility of the finished product by swelling or migrating in high humidity conditions. As we have discussed a major market seems to be growing for a family of plasticizers compatible with water dispersed resin systems, particularly systems which have reduced humectant properties but which are compatible in water/resin dispersions and solutions. It is felt that a basic synthesis approach is required, but a careful reevaluation of existing products might also allow some further penetration into the specialty markets.
