CHEMICALS INTEROFFICE/LAKE CHARLES TO FROM Randy Hall Ron Olingar DATE Juna 24, 1986 SUBJECT AIBN Solubility in CPC Originally, wa wara asked to invaatigata the solubility of tba initiator AIBN in pivaloyl chloride at tha nacassary catalyst pot charga of 2%. Ha checked tha solubility of both PC and CPC up to 5% and found tha catalyst to ba solubla. Thera appaars to ba n problem with solubility whan tha target was to ba 2.0% charga f the catalyst pot. In a recant test run at Barberton, tha catalyst feed point was sat at tha column instead of tha reactor pot. The new feed point produced an increased need for AIBN which lead to solubility problems with AIBN in the catalyst pot charge. Thus, we examined CPC's ability to dissolve AIBN. The results are as follows: AIBN. wt% CPC 50:50 fff-CPC Mix 5 7.5 10.0 Soluble Soluble Insoluble Soluble Insoluble Insoluble Another set of samples was repeated for the 50:50 mixture of PC and CPC, so that we could zero in on the maximum AIBN charge. The results were: AIBI'L.., ,Wt% 6.0 6.5 7.0 50I5.Q CPC soluble Soluble (near borderline) Insoluble As predicted, AIBN appears slightly more soluble in CPC. A 50:50 mixture of PC and CPC should be able to handle the three-fold increase in AIBN charge. If any laboratory assistance is needed in this area or any aspect of the CPC project, please feel free to call roe at 491-4628. ce cc: Don Reich Gene Laukonen, Barberton Jeff Yost, Barberton SL 001349
