TO: ALL OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE SUPERVISORS ALL SAFETY INSPECTORS/SUPERVISORS SUBJECT: ASBESTOS RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Recent and/or anticipated changes in the Health and Safety regulations that apply to asbestos require that DPMC discontinue the use of the 3M 9900 (yellow) paper mask for asbestos protection. Effective April 15, 1984 the dual cartridge respirator (Scott or MSA brand) and the 3M 9920 dust/fume mask are the only respirators recommended for protection against asbestos exposure. While both respirators are satisfactory for asbestos. Brown and Root's Group Corporate Industrial Hygiene requires that their personnel utilize only the dual cartridge mask and not the 3M 9920 respirator. As Shell DPMC generally provides all respiratory protective equipment to contractors, this requirement by Brown & Root Safety will be accommodated wherever possible. Of course, air supplied respiratory protection can also be used if required. A limited supply of respirators for asbestos protection will be stocked in each green area cabinet. Each packaged mask will be visibly identified to facilitate a proper mask selection. Where a significant number of respirators will be required for asbestos work the Shell Respirator Center should be contacted (Ext. 6386). A guide to the proper mask selection is provided as Attachment 1. Personnel are advised to utilize the results of their fit test results in selecting a mask size.
