Jarnot, Ph.D., DABT Senior Toxicologist Regulatory and Scientific Affairs American Petroleum Institute 1220 L Street, NW Washington, DC 20005-4070 Re: Case-control study of AML and NHL in Shanghai Dear Bruce: You may recall back at the August meeting in California I talked to you about my concern that our travel budget for the case-control study in 2004 might not be adequate. The major reasons for that are: 1. Patient enrollment was delayed due to the late start of the clinical/diagnostic laboratory and the SARS epidemic in China, and 2. It becomes clear that I need to be physically in Shanghai at this stage of the study and work with the staff more than I previously estimated. In our original proposal, we have budgeted only 4 trips to Shanghai for 2004, which will not be sufficient. The ideal solution is that additional new funds be available to us for 2004. However, I understand that any request for additional new funds will be very difficult. I have talked with Patrick Beatty about this and it seems the best option available to us at this time is to reallocate some of the funds within our approved budget. In our contract, we have $45,831 approved for 2007. The amount was originally budgeted for two trips for presenting study results at international conferences after the study has been completed. I suggest that the amount be moved to 2004.
