REDUCE R&M OF METAL TRANSFER AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - 1232031101 Asbestos-Free Board Products Progress: 1. A meeting has been scheduled with Johns-Manville on 79/1/16
to discuss their asbestos-free board products. Discussions will center upon Alcoa's plant trials and laboratory testing as well as their new header grade material (Marinite E). 2. Reportedly, Vernon will completely change from molten metal Marinite to heat-treated Marinite I for header applications. Ingots have been successfully cast from tool and jig and 635mn (25") FDC asbestos-free headers. 3. The Marinite I order was received and the boards have been received and heat-treated. Material will be distributed to plants for testing. 4. Heat-treated Marinite XL has shown promising results at ATC as 508mm x 1092mm (20" x 43") sheet ingot headers and backup boards. Six boards have been sent to Warrick for trial. 5. Preliminary feedback from Badin & Wenatchee indicate Marinite XL can be successfully used for small HDC headers. 6. Heat-treated Pyrotherm B-l was found to be too fragile for sheet ingot headers. Difficulty was encountered in machining. Program: 1. Continue to monitor trials on Marinite XL, Marinite I, and Pyrotherm B-l boards.
2. Conduct further laboratory tests on temperature effects on shrinkage, loss on ignition, and corrosion for Marinite I.
3. Finish evaluation of an alumina-silicate material, Insural, supplied by Foseco.
