A. Kehoe Dear Dr. Kehoes Thank you very much for your letter of April 21 enumerating the points which you had in mind discussing with me when you were in HewYork. 1. I amcertainly sorry that we could not have had a threecornered discussion concerning the first item you mentioned regarding transportation of fluid to plants and customers. Frankly, I feel that one side of the story has been presented toyouwithout proper"shading of our participation in the circumstances. You may rest assured how ever, that it is our intention to work harmoniously with the Safety Department. I should think this would go without saying inasmuch as I have always felt that I have personally been a staunch advocate of their activities and in a way, sponsored some of their program. Nevertheless, on the point in question I think that the approach by themhas been somewhat faulty and I should like to discuss this matter with you the next time we meet rather than make it a subject of considerable correspondence. 2. I amvery much opposed to including in the Safety Manual information with respect to the manufacture- of tetraethyl lead and Ethyl Fluid. I think that the contents of the Safety Manual should deal strictly with safety and the practices which we require to carry out our program. Subjects of an informative nature, not dealing with safety, in mymind have no place in such a manual. Secondly, because of our 8-rrangements with the duFont Company, I do not feel we should unduly publicize our processes. I have discussed "this matter with Mr. Lewis and find that we have rather opposite views. I have agreed to sit in conference with Dr. Edgar, Mr. Taylor and himto further discuss the matter. 3. I await your further views in connection with the medical care of Ethyl Gasoline employees at Baton Rouge. HE 0000912 D r . E . A. Kehoe, April 21, 1936 Dear Dr. Kehoe: Last week we forwarded to the Stevens Metal Products Cong)any two empty 55-gallon drums for repairs. These particular drums represent samples of approximately five hundred and some odd drums which have circular gouges in either one or both hBads. This gouging has occurred from time to time due to occasional failure of the steel brushes on the drumwashing machine. Lately we have been withdrawing these drums from service feeling that until we develop some method of determining the extent of the damage to the strength of the drums we had best set themaside. ^ Bob Russell gave vis a estimate of between five and six dollars on the replacement of these defective heads and the two sample drums were sent out in an effort to determine the exact repair costs. This morning I called Bob and told himto advise his plant to hold up starting this work until I had been able to get an expression from you with regard to the possible hazards con nected. I do not knowwhy I failed to realize this before but I amafraid;now that even though we acid wash these drums the workmen will be exposed to a certain amount of odor fromtriethyl lead bromide and chloride salts which we feel are responsible for the odor which we know exists.
