A sm all homemade fan i s lo c a te d above t h is process and does cause some exhaust. A fte r the screening and c o lle c tin g o p eration s, the asbestos, is emptied in to large paper boxes. This emptying from the cyclone and bag c o lle c t o r causes considerable a d d itio n a l d u st. The asbestos i s then placed in to sm aller cardboard packing con ta in e rs. I t i s necessary to t&ap> the asbestos down in t o these containers to g e t s u ff ic ie n t weight in to them. This tamp in g process again causes ad d itio n a l dustJ No hood has been supplied fo r th is op eration . Over a p eriod o f y e a r s ; considerable asbestos dust has b u ilt up on the w a lls arti ledges on the second flo o r o f t h is b u ild in g . Now, every time the wind blows through the area, a l o t o f the asbestos du st i s blo7/n into the a i r . The work area i s in obvious need o f clean up, and a f t e r the clean up an improved system o f housekeeping, p re fe ra b ly by vacuum c le a n e r . The workers stated th a t approxim ately 1/2 o f t h e ir time was spent in packing the asbestos into the containers. I did not actu ally observe .th is operation during the v i s i t . I t i s e s s e n tia l t h a t a l l o f the d u ct work le a k s be p ro p erly and permanently r e p a ir e d . There i s an in - d r a f t a t th e ch argin g p o in t in th e cru sh er system o f 200 fpm. This c o n tro ls the ' d u st generated when the sh ovel i s emptied in to th e ch u te. I t does not,how ever, c o n tro l ' any of th e other d u st genera.ted^during the shoveling operations. This opening is ap pro xim ately one fo o t sq u are. A rath er poor homemade exhaust -lin e , has .been ruri to .the bagging op eratio n o f th e cru sh er system . This l in e was clogged a t the t in e o f th e ' " " v i s i t so th a t no exhaust w as'p resen t on the bagging o p e ra tio n . From the looks o f the s it u a tio n , I doubt th a t the v e n tila tio n would be e ffe c t iv e . Mr. Sm ith , the Foreman, s ta te d th a t the tonnage the p la n t could produce would be ap proxim ately one to two tons per day from the crusher system and two to fo u r tonsper day from th e b a ll m ill system . Hoods are to go over the bin s from which the asbestos ore i s shoveled in to a- grin d in g system . The screens appeared to be c lo s e ly covered. Almost a l l - o f - t h e ground asbestos no7/ goes to the bagger lo c a te d , in the basement. Some i s caught u p s ta ir s bu t t h i s . i s than dumped down a chute to the hopper which feed s the basement b a gger. The Company is going to sw itch from the p resen t f a b r ic ba^pto paper bags in the near fu tu re inasmuch as th e ir customers request such a change. T his w i l l d e fin ite ly lessen the dust conditions.
