TOLUIDINE REDS
Class 8600 S-W Manufacture 11-1-57 CP News Letter L-33 Page 19
Toluidine Reds are azo pigments made by coupling meta-nitro-para-toluldlne with beta-naphthol. They are made in a vide range of shades. They have excellent brightness, good covering power and outstand ing durability in full shade.
Light resistance of the Toluidine Reds Is excellent in full shades and fair In tints. Resistance to acid and alkali is good. They are non-bleeding In the usual oil and oleoreslnous paint systems and in air dried synthetics, but bleed In lacquer solvents, alcohol, aromatic solvents_and paraffin. The standard Toluidine Reds will bronze when baked at temperatures higher than 180?. All Toluidlnes are Micro-tex (atomized).
Of all the red toners, the Toluidine Reds are the most widely used for exterior coatings. This is be cause they have both excellent lightfastness and extreme brilliance in masstone. For the same reasons they also are highly popular for use In Industrial enamels. They are to be recoasnended for all pro ducts except where bleeding or bake resistance Is a factor or the very best alkali resistance is necessary.

PERMANSA REDS
(Chlorinated Paras)
Permanse Reds are azo pigments made by coupling ortho-chlor-pare-nltranlline with beta-naphthol. The Permansa Reds are similar to the Toluidine Reds in general physical characteristics, but are lighter, cleaner and more brilliant. They are also known as "Fire Red."
Resistance to light Is excellent in full shades and fair in tints. Resistance to acid and alkali is good. Permansa Red does not bleed in water or oil, but bleeds in lacquers and synthetic vehicles. The maximum temperature of baking without bronzing is 180F.
Specific uses for Permansa Reds include bulletin enamels, gasoline pump enamels, filling station enam els, show card colors, and any finish where a light bright red is desired.

PERMACHLOR REDS
Permachlor Rads, also known as "Parachlor Reds," are aso pigments made from para-chlor-ortbo-nltranillne and beta-napbthol. They differ cheailcally from Permansa Red which are aade from ortho-chlorpara-nitraniline and beta-naphthol.
Permachlor Reds have considerably lower hiding than Permansa Reds and Toluldlne Reds. They have slightly better durability than the Permansa Rads In full shade and considerably better In tint. The Permachlor Reds are In the same range as Toluldlne Reds in full shade and In tint.
Considering the poorer hiding and strength of the Permachlor Reds, It has been believed that this shade should be obtained by combinations of Toluldlne Red and Permansa Red. However, now that red tinted house paints are becoming more popular there appears to be a place for a light red pigment which has relatively good durability In tint.
The light red house paints are usually formulated with sufficient titanium dioxide and sine oxide so that the deficiency in hiding of Permachlor Red 10382 Is easily overcome by the white pigment. In some cases there may also be small amounts of Iron oxide present to give the desired shade, which also improves the hiding.

PARA REDS
Para Reds are aso pigments produced by coupling para-nitraniline with beta-naphthol. Two distinct types, light and deep, are made. The light shade Is the straight coupling, while the deep is made by replacing approximately 101 of the beta-naphthol with mono-acid.
Para Reds have better permanence than Graphic Reds. They have bright masstones, but the reduced shades and tints are much yellower and not as clean as the Graphic Reds.
Resistance to light is good in full shades, but only fair In tints. They bleed in varnish, water, paraffin, alcohol, and coal tar thlnners. Resistance to alkali and acid is good. Maximum baking temperature without bronzing is 180F.
Para Reds have excellent covering and are economical pigments where a moderate degree of durability is sufficient and freedom from bleed is not required. They are used for industrial and implesmnt enamels.

LITHOL REDS AND MAROONS
Llthol Reds are produced by diazotizlng Tobias Acid (2-naphthylamine-l-sulfonic acid), coupling this with beta-napbthol and forming the sodium, barium or calcium salt. Because they are metal salts, these pigments are more resistant to coooon organic solvents and water than the pigment'dyestuffs.
Sodium salts have a light yellow shade, barium salts are medium red, and calcium salts dark red or maroon.
The Llthol Reds may be non-resinated or resinated. The non-resinated are known as Graphic Reds and the resinated, Brltone or Illlni Reds. The Brltone Reds are produced by Incorporating up to 20X metallic resinates. This deepens the masstone, produces a brighter tint with no loss in tinting strength. They are all more transparent than the corresponding non-resinated pigment.
Although the Graphic Reds have only fair lightfastness in full shades and poor light resistance in tints, they are used considerably in coatings because they are non-bleeding, have low cost, brilliant shades-and high tinting strength. They have fair heat resistance and good acid and alkali resistance.
Graphic Reds are clean in both full shades and tints and have good opacity in paint systems. They are not sufficiently durable for use in work requiring exterior exposure. They are the most economical organic reds available and are widely used in toy enamels, dipping enamels, and general industrial ap plications where good durability is not needed.
Brltone Maroons are darker shades of the resinated calcium Brltone Reds.

ORION RED
Orion Red is a new pigment never available before. It is produced by diazotizing a new amine, cou pling with beta-naphthol and forming a metal aalt.
Orion Red is exceptionally bright and opaque, with a very light yellowish-red mass shade. It has a bright, bluish red tint shade. Its properties are: bleed resistance, somewhat better than Lithol Reds; strength, same as Sodium Lithol Red; and light resistance, equal to that of the Lithols.

Arcturua Reds are barium salts of dlazotlzed 2-cblor-5-amino-cumene-4-sulfonic acid coupled to betanaphthol. They are brilliant yellowish red shades, having low bleeding characteristics and low cost.
The Arcturus Reds are produced in reslnated and non-resinated forms. The resinated, Arcturus Red CP-1275, exhibits the usual differences from the non-resinated color, Arcturus Red CP-1270, being slightly brighter, yellower and darker, and having considerably less bronze.
The Arcturus Reds are not recaomiended for use in paints and enamels because of their transparency.

Remarks
TOLUIDINE REDS are couplings of m-nitro p-toluidine with beta-naphthol. They have excellent brightness, good covering, and excellent durability in full shade.
Light resistance is excellent in full shades and fair in tints. Acid and alkali
resistance is good. They are non-bleeding in oil, oleoresinous paints and airdry synthetics, but bleed in lacquer solvents, alcohol, aromatics and paraffin. The standard toluidine reds will bronze at temperatures above 180F.
Toluidine Reds combine extreme brilliance in masstone with excellent lightfast
ness and therefore are the most widely used red toners for exterior use. They also find wide use in industrial enamels.

GRAPHIC REDS are produced by di-azotizing tobias acid (2-naphthylamine 1-sulxonic acid, coupling with beta-naphthol) and forming the sodium, barium
or calcium salt. Because they are metal salts, these pigments are more resis tant to common organic solvents and water than the pigment dye-stuffs.
Sodium salts have a light yellow shade, barluni gaits are medium red, and cal
cium salts dark red or maroon.

Remarks (Con't.)
Resinated Graphic Reds are produced by incorporating up to 2C$ of metallic resinates. This deepens the masstone, produces a brighter tint with no loss in tinting strength. They are all more transparent than the corres ponding non-resinated pigment. Resinated types are known by the names "Britone" or "Illlni".
Graphic Reds have fair light resistance in full shades and poor in tints. Heat resistance is fair, and acid and alkali resistance good. They are non bleeding in water and oil, and will not bleed from a lacquer or synthetic into a white overstripe.
Britone naroons are darker shades of the resinated calcium Britone reds.
