Ill BROADWAY- NEW YORK ROOM 1815 LETTEN Ho. 233 - 1947 April 17 ROCKWELL ELECTED BOARD CHAIRMANj MARTINO, PRESIDENT At the directors meeting held today, Fletcher W. Rockwell was elected chair man of the board and Joseph A. Martino was named to succeed him as president. Mr. Rockwell has a record of over 50 years with the Company. Starting as plant superintendent of the Southern White Lead Works, Chicago, in December 1896, he came to New York in 1920 as production manager, was advanoedto vice president in 1937, and became president a year later. Formerly executive vice president, Mr. Martino also came up from the ranks. He began his Company career in 1916 as an office boy for United Lead Co. and was made assistant comptroller of National Lead in 1934, comptroller in 1945, and vice president last year. COMPANY DIRECTORS RE-ELECTED At the 55th annual meeting of the stockholders of the Company at Sayreville today, the following five members of the board of directors were re-elected to suc ceed themselves for a term of three years: J. A. Martino, D. A. Merson, Harold Rowe, Charles Simon and J. A. Taylor. KELLS AND STRICKLAND, ATLANTIC VETERANS, RETIRE John C. Kells and Edward L. Strickland, Atlantic Branch long-termers whose com bined service with the Company totals a few years short of a century, have gone on the inactive list. Mr. Kells joined Atlantic on August 8, 1898 as an office boy at headquarters, then located at 100 William St., N.Y.C. About 12 years later he was pat in charge of the Order Dept., a job he held until he took his recent leave of absence prior to actual retirement. Mr. Strickland started with the Crooke Works as lighterage engineer on June 20, 1901. He was transferred in 1926 to the Brooklyn plant to act in a similar capacity until 1930 when the Branch sold its lighters. For the past 17 years, he served as stationary engineer at the plant. WATTS NOW ON LEWIS BOARD George A. Watts, manager of tne metal department of the Philadelphia Branch, was elected to the John T. Lewis & Bros. Co. board of directors at their April 14 meeting. Mr. Watts has been with the Company since 1908, starting with the Hoyt Metal Co. and transferring to Lewis in 1919. 0000-NLI-000024892 ACTIVITIES OF RESEARCH LABORATORY PEOPLE. Alex Stewart, director of research, has been appointed a member of the Research Advisory Council of the Research Institute of Temple University. Carlton Rose, head of the pigment and paint dept., conducted.the paint symposium at the recent ASTM meeting in Philadelphia. Mr. Rose is secretary of Committee B-l of the ASM. E. P. Peterson, of the paint and pigment research staff, participated in the round table discussion on painting southern yellow pine at the March 19-22 meeting of the Southern Paint & Varnish Production Club in Memphis, Term. Thomas McDonough and Clyde B. Mills were honored recently by their laboratory associates at a 35th service anniversary luncheon. Both men joined the Company on March 1, 1912. -3- REID, MINING CQMioITTEE CHAIRMAN; HALLETT, SECRETARY Joseph H. Reid, who has been secretary of the Mining Committee, was named chairman of that committee at the board of directors meeting today, assuming the post relinquished by J. A. Martino. R, L. Hallett, chief chemist, was appointed secretary of the coramittee. SHATTUCK COMPLETES 45 YEARS WITH COMPANY Herbert Shattuck, factory superintenaent of the Roxbury plant of boston branch, was awarded his 45-year service button on April 10. Mr. Shattuck started in the white lead plant of the Chadwick-Boston Lead Co. at Salem in 1902. When the plant was closed in 1908, he went to the Roxbiiry factory. Appointed assistant factory superintendent in 1921, he remained at Roxbury until 1934 when he was put in charge of the white lead warehouse at Salem. Two years later, Mr. Snattuck returned to Roxbury. 0000-NLI-000024894 TITANIUM MEM HONORED BI BUSINESS GROUPS W. H. Woods, credit manager of the Titanium Division, has again been elected chairman of the Saw Material Credit Association of New fork. W. ft. Willetts, of the Titanium service laboratories, recently was named chair man of the pigments section of the Coating Committee of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Mr. Willetts also serves on the Graphic Arts Committee of this organization and is vice-chairman of Committee D-6 of the ASM. DE CAMPI BEACHES 75TH MILESTONE E. A. De Campi, who retired as manager of the Chicago Branch in 1941 after 41 years of service, recently celebrated his 75th birthday anniversary. The occasion, as reported by the "Paint, Oil & Chemical Review" of Chicago, marked the annual renewal of a custom which began many years ago. In 1878, de Campi and his boyhood chum, Eugene Whelan, had lunch together to celebrate their birthdays. Through the next 69 years, as each boy grew up, entered business, won success and then retired, these birthday luncheons have continued. KAEGEBEHN ADDftESSES TITANIUM MEETING C. F. Kaegebehn, manager of the patent department, spoke on patents and their relation to chemists and the chemical industry at a recent meeting of the technologists of Titanium Division at the Sayreville plant. Dr. W. K. Nelson presided. KIRK STAftTS SHEET LEAD PftODUCTION The sheet lead mill installed in the Morris P. Kirk & Son plant at Los Angeles has been put into operation. Announcement of this fact is being made to the Pacific Coast trade. Lead sheet in all standard sizes, gauges and types for the chemical industries is being produced. Kirk's lead pipe making equipment has been in pro duction for some months. TITANIUM PENSIONER PASSES Martin Snyder, engineer at the Perth Amboy plant of Atlantic Branch and later at the Sayreville plant of the Titanium Division, died March 26 at the age of 69. Mr. Snyder joined the Company in 1905 and retired in 1938.
