Description Commercial hair dryers are produced specifically for commercial _ establishments rather than for household use. These articles are^described as upright, free-standing (or fixed to chairs), and may employ a "hood" to channel the hot air stream. Such items are designed to become a permanent fixture in hair styling salons and, to a lesser extent, in barber shops. The following discussion excludes hand-held hair dryers. These items are not easily distinguished from models commonly used in the home, may not be specifically designed for commercial use, and may be offered for sale to the general public. Production Data on commercial hair dryers are not separately reported in official Government publications. Howeve'r, the National Beauty and ^ Barber Manufacturers Association (NBBMA.) reported total sales of upright commercial hair dryers in 1978 of $7 million. About 40,000 such dryerswere sold in 1978, at an average price of $175; this was represented as only a modest increase over estimated 1977 levels. Based on NBBMA figures, there are some 240-320 thousand upright commercial hair dryers currently in use, assuming a 6 to 8 year expected life. Conair Corporation, Edison, New Jersey, is reported to be the largest domestic producer of upright commercial hair dryers. A number of other firms also produce these articles, but their individual market shares appear to be small; many such firms may operate nationwide on a limited scale, or may concentrate on specific regional or metropolitan markets. ' Data on U.S. imports of commercial hair dryers are not available; however, the amount of such imports is believed to be small according to a spokesman from the U.S. International Trade Commission. Distribution Supplies and equipment for use in commercial hair salons and barber shops reach their consumers through a network of distributor-wholesalers, these wholesalers are not brand-aligned, and may sell a variety of products from several manufacturers' lines. Individual product choices are frequently made by wholesalers at industry-sponsored trade shows. These distributorwholesalers rarely receive exclusive territorial rights or restrictions from the manufacturers. Based on NBBMA figures, there are approximately 8,000 beauty and barber supply wholesaler salespeople in the U.S. One commercial hair dryer manufacturer put the number of nationwide wholesalers at 1,800. The number of wholesalers which engage in the sale of "hardgoods", such as upright commercial hair dryers, is expected to approximate the latter figure. Consumers Upright commercial hair dryers are usually purchased from the ^ wholesaler by the individual shop; these items do not enter the retail market. The shop owner has control over this equipment, intended for use by the stylists. However, small numbers of these hair dryers may find their way into private households due to shop closings and the consequent liquidation of shop assets. From 1972 to 1978, the number of consuming establishments decreased by 5 percent (see enclosed table). However, over this period a trend toward larger, multi-operator shops has developed, an assumption somewhat supported by the rapid increase in employees and gross receipts. Further, the establishments are concentrating in metropolitan areas in an attempt to increase the number of clientele. As salon staffs increase, a greater number of dryers per establishment becomes necessary. Although hand held dryers may account for the bulk of salon usage, upright models are also required for permanent wave styling and other special styles and allow for increased productivity, since stylists are able to accomodate other customers during the drying process. Therefore, the demand for these items appears to have remained strong. The current number of principal users (stylists) of upright commercial hair dryers could approach 886,000. The wires have a felted asbestos layer, covered by a fiberglass overbraid impregnated with silicone resin and, therefore, the asbestos was not exposed to the air stream. These models were manufactured until late 1971. Ultra Comfort model, which was produced until mid-1979, con tained an asbestos string which was exposed to the air flow. The model also vised asbestos insulated wires like those used in the Siesta models until late 1971. COMPANY ACTIONS AND POLICY Revlon informs the Corrmission that all models are professional use only and that there is no asbestos in current production.
