Drum coating is another important application of red lead primers at the Ethyl Corporation. "Ethyl" anti knock fluid drums are primed with a red lead vinyl paint. In the case of new drums this is applied by the drum manufacturer directly over the black steel without sandblasting. Some of the older drums have been sandblasted and coated with the red lead vinyl primer. The vinyl primer is followed in a few minutes by a conventional alkvd base "color coat." When drums are returned from a customer thev are cleaned with hot 10% caustic to re move the color coat. The red lead vinyl primer is not affected by this treatment.
