Fowler - Marietta Milford Tigard July 16, 1975 R+-D 3^7 In order to take advantage of your unique system of ready mix production and the versator, we would like to run some trial batches of an asbestos--free ready mix formulation at your plant. This formula requires several new raw materials. Purchasing has been asked to order some of these raw materials and George Fowler will obtain the remainder from the Marietta Plant. Hopefully, you will be receiving in a short period of time, from Union Oil, two 55 gal. drum of AMSCO Res. 4170, and 5 gala, of AMP-95. From Rohm and Bass you will receive 5-40 lb. containers of Acrysol ASE-6C. George Fowler will bring to Milford 1,000 lbs. of Attagel 40 and 300 lbs. of Methocel 4KM. R & D will be charged for the costs of all raw materials. Please let us know as soon as you receive all of them. As a means of preserving any competitive advantage that we might obtain from the use of the new raw materials, we strongly recommend that extreme caution be used in any contacts with their suppliers. These people should not be told, under any circumstances, that their product Is being used in an asbestosfree product. In addition to this, we do sot want to label the product with any specific raw material name. Instead, it should be referred to only as "Asbestos-Free Ready Mix". WNGiJg W. N. G. Seli.:off, recently f -'eased '.he results of tests of 15 . -fjs of snackle that had been pur- 1 i-'iascd in New York City Five were 1 b".;n<i to contain appreciable amounts 1 "f asbestos. (Some of the samples were duplicate brands bought at dif' f''-ept times.) \ccording to Dr. Selikoff, the i union of Drywall Tapers and Point! ers of Greater New York called his 1 attention to the possibility that the I spackle might contain asbestos. John I Alfarone. an official of the union, i said some of the members became ill j and were found to be suffering from - asbestos-caused diseases. AS A RESULT of Dr. Selikoff's findings, he said, his union members will no longer work with any spackle ! that ' nptains asbestos, and will only sand ' dried spackle if they are ' provide-1 with masks. The asbestos in -aek'" is -eleased into the air. ac > pr Selikoff. when the dry i - - -"'vy v. -s - 'V-r 'o make a paste and when any form of spack le is sanded. Dr. David Rail, director of the Na tional Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, said it was doubtful that someone doing a small amount of sparkling work at home was in any danger. But he said that some one redoing the walls of an entire house might be taking "an unneces sary risk." Extensive research on the results of long-range, low-level asbestos exposure is in progress, he said. A spokesman for U S. Gypsum, the manufacturer of one of the spackling brands found to contain asbestos, said the company was phasing out the production of spackles with asbestos. A spot check of several Manhattan paint stores found cans of U.S. Gypsum's Texolite, which con tains from 6 to 10 percent asbestos, still on the market. Also found was another U.S. Gypsum product called Durabond Paste Spackling, which was labeled: "Caution: Contains asbestos fibers. Avoid creating dust Breathing asbestos dust may cause serious bodily harm." THE OTHER PRODUCTS round by Dr. Selikoff to contain asbestos were Perf A Tape, Metro and Arvon The Perf A Tape was counted twice by Dr. Selikoff, because it was pur chased and tested twice, only in '972 or earlier, and later in January, 1974. Products found to be without asbes tos were Red Top. Muralo, Patch Paste, Schatk, U-G-L Cerfex Kex. New Kex and Dap, Dr. Selikoff cau tioned that the products on the mar ket today might contain different ingredients. Persons wishing to minimize any risk should use only paste spackle and should wear a mask when sand ing. Most labels on spackle products do not disclose the constituents that went into them. iCc: ched Smc*Jfpj fixVc Cork^`//i/ $11 Lchryer'f' SGP 0008273 DEPARTMENT QR LOCATION u r- requested by R E0 US11cklUM J'439 PURCHASE ORDER GecrgiaFfecific Corporation GYPSUM DIVISION 9CO S.W FIFTH AVENUE. This revision was made to lengthen the working time and increase the crack resistance. It may be necessary to use slightly more water in Ready Mix Compound 974 for the correct viscosity. I suggest you manufacture one batch, being sure that all the ingredients are accurately metered. Make your usual tests and if the batch looks okay, more trials can be arranged. You may charge this special batch to 010-8489-7891 R & D 347. Let us know when the batch is made and what it looks like. CWL/gvp cc: Mr.yE. B. Hollingsworth Mr. k.J. Petraline Mr. 0. E. Burch Mr. D. Lehnert Product Development Manager Gypaum Division 14030 S.'W. 72nd Avenue TIGARD, OR 97223 Dear Bill, I enjoyed having the opportunity to visit with you and discuss the character istics of SWRS synthetic pulp. Under separate cover I am sending you 5 lbs of each fluff dried and sheets of E-400 SWP pulp. The sheets contain about 55# moisture. Enclosed is a picture of our fluffing operation. The pulp is passed through two high speed material handling fans connected in series. The sheets of pulp are fed into the first fan which blows the fibers into a cyclone. These fibers drop out the bottom of the cyclone into the second fan which blows the fluffed fibers into a screen enclosed chamber. The air passes out through the screen and the fibers drop into a collection bag. The fans operate at 1800 RIW. On a commercial scale you would probably use 24 inch diameter fans equipped with 3 to 5 hp motors. We have no problem with air-borne fibers with the fluffing system shown in the picture. Please contact me if you have any question or need more samples. Sincerely yours, DRG/db Enclosure D. R. Grafton Research Engineer Specialty ftipers Research SWP. Synthetic Pulp Camas. Our Sep tember allocation from Union Carbide is expected to ship at the end of this week to Acme. This was originally scheduled for Marietta but changed because of Acme's lower inventory position. Our October car is scheduled to ship to Marietta about October 9. After Marietta advised they would run out by October 13 it was deemed advisable to transfer 20M pounds of SG210 from Akron to hold them until their car arrived and this material is now enroute. Two cars of 7RF-02 asbestos were received during September, 1 each to Akron and Marietta with a total of 161,600 pounds which gives us a gain of 42,100 pounds in inventory for September. Two cars of 7RF-02 are enroute at this writing - one car shipped on 9/22 to Milford and one went out on 9/30 to Marietta. There is some question at this writing whether J-M will let us have more than one car of 7RF-02 asbestos in October and there is a possi bility that we might not really need it. ELA/mf CC: Messrs. G.
