Air campling to document employe exposures to asbestos fibers was Conducted at the Eagle Faint Plant on October 5, 1961- The sampling was performed by Hr. J. S. Sehlicht, Industrial Hygiene Technician, to evaluate employe exposures during the routine operation of the power house. The analysis results, as shown in the attached tables, indicate that employe exposures ware wall below any applicable standard.
The monitoring was conducted to characterize the exposure of the turbine operator. The results show that the calculated eight-hour time weighted average (TS?A) for asbestos is 0.1S fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc), based on a sampling period of 434 minutes. Although this exposure level is below the current OSH& permissible exposure limit {PSI>} of 2.0 f/cc as & T6?A for an eight-hour period, it exceeds 0.1 f/cc, an exposure level set by 0SHA to daterjaiaa whether an employe has actually
been exposed to asbestos. If this level is exceeded, the employe is considered a having been exposed to asbestos; therefore, an annual physical examination, including x-ray and other testa specified la CF2. 1916.1001, must be provided to this employe. QSHA standards also specify a maximal exposure / litait of 16 asbestos f/cc which should not be exceeded at any time.
However, the turbine operator was not working with any known asbestos-containing materials during the sampling period. In addition, the substantial difference between the results of the two samples shows the inconsistency of the exposure levels
obtained for the morning and afternoon periods. Therefore, it is recommended that further sampling be conducted to reevaluate the operator exposure to asbestos and determine the validity of the sampling results. Whether the operator should receive an annuel physical examination will depend on the recommended additional sampling.
The samples were collected on membrane filters using a calibrated air sampling pump attached to the employe.
