Bill,
Today, Southern Company issued an environmental report titled "Planning for a Low-Carbon Future" on our website. The report reflects our continued commitment to serving customers and protecting the environment, while also responding to climate-related shareholder resolutions.
In the report, we establish an intermediate goal of a 50-percent reduction in our carbon emissions from 2007 levels by 2030 and a longer-term goal of low-to-no carbon operations by 2050. These goals are consistent with our existing business strategy and long-term, least-cost resource planning, which have already reduced our carbon emissions by approximately 36 percent since 2007. Achieving these goals is dependent on many factors, including natural gas prices, the pace and extent of technology innovation and state regulatory frameworks.
Southern Company remains committed to investing in the full portfolio of energy resources and research and development in order to continue providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to the more than 9 million customers we are privileged to serve.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.
