Upcoming: December, 2022 PFAS: The challenge for highly regulated and essential sectors Dear attendee, Over the last few years, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have become a global concern and a priority under the European Unions Green Deal goal to achieve a Toxic-Free environment. PFAS have gathered momentum due to their widespread use and specific properties which make them extremely persistent in the environment and present in water systems all over the world. Many developed countries have already or are taking actions to set strict(er) safety values for all or the most harmful PFAS substances in water and to restrict uses of certain PFAS. Within the EU, the next action involves a restriction proposal, currently developed for most uses of more than 4,000 PFASs by the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. It is expected to be submitted to ECHA by January 2023. Restricting PFAS effectively is far from easy. Challenges in the implementation of PFAS regulations find opposition from PFAS producers and users, political objections, economic challenges, and a lack of consensus as to its grouping and scientific-based hazard qualification. An intense debate between EU institutions, academia, civil society and industries is ongoing on how to manage the associated human health and environmental risks whilst ensuring the continued availability of services and products essential to the wellbeing of society. As time draws closer to this widest restriction proposal to date and the adoption of the revision proposal for the CLP and REACH regulations, we bring forward a dedicated in-person morning event on December __, 2022 in Brussels. The event, led by___________, will host key stakeholders from across the industry and organisations involved and impacted by the forthcoming proposal.
