On January 22, 1969 air samples were taken for asbestos dust In air by Mr. David Scheffler and Mr. Robert Comboy in the area of the asbestos braiding maohines. The purpose of the survey was to determine the effectiveness of the enclosures around two of the braiders.
Asbestos dust concentrations taken at the breathing zone level in front of the enclosed braiders was below the Threshold Limit Value of 2 million particles per cubic foot as recommended by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.
The new asbestos braider enclosures appear to be effective. Lower dust counts were found on the braider which was also enclosed on the bottom.
The remainder of the asbestos braiders should be enclosed in a similar manner.
Recommendations, Dlsousslon and Data will be found on the attached pages.

1. Asbestos braiders #1 - #18 should be enclosed and exhausted as has been done with braiders #19 and #20. Asbestos dust concentrations have been reduced to within acceptable limits with these enclosures.

On December 10, 1968 we found exoeeelve asbestos dust concentrations in the area of the braiders. Since that time two of the braiders have been enclosed. Air samples taken in front of these enolosed braiders showed a significant reduction in the amount of asbestos dust in the atmosphere.
Asbestos braiders #19 and #20 were enclosed. Braider #20 was enolosed on the sides, top and bottom. Braider #19 was not enclosed on the bottom.
Dust counts on #19 were 1 and 0.*f6 million particles per cubic foot. Dust counts on #20 were 0.J6 and 0.33 million particles per cubic foot. The braider which was enolosed on the bottom (#20; seems to be oapturing more of the asbestos dust. Consequently, future in stallations should be enclosed on the bottom.
Mr. Ed Behan, Asbestos Department Manager, informed us that the exhaust system had been cleaned since our first visit. This explains in part why our dust counts were lower on the unenclosed braiders than they were on our previous visit. Another contributing factor would be that all of the braiders were not in operation during this survey as they were in December, 1968.
In the opinion of the writer, if all of the asbestos braiders are enclosed on the sides, top and bottom, asbestos dust concentrations in the area of these machines will be less than 2 million particles per oubie foot of air.
