The "Times" Survey of Asbestos and tha "Asbestos and
Boalth" advertisements for architectural, building, municipal
and educational Journals lava duly appeared. In viaw of tha
limited number of customers for tho industry in the shipbuilding
field the A.I.C. have decided to roly on personal contact rather
than advertising to communicate with shipbuilders and ships'
designers. On the other band an advertising campaign sirasslng
the positive merits of asbestos, particularly for lira protection,
is being considered. A TV treatment on these lines has been
produced for consideration by the
and the Central
Office of Information propose toproduce a short film, for over
seas consumption, with A.I.C. guidance- In addition BUI U
- Knovrlton International have beanaetedtoproducoideasfor an
A.I. C. film on the merits ofasbostos. Further misleading
articles lamedlcal,. technical aad locnl journals hava bean '
challenged by appropriate letters to the editors.

Literature .......

The general pamphlet - "Ashostes-Safoty and Control'' has
been exhaustively studied by A.LC. members and is now being
printed. It will be 'used primarily as background information
for the industry's own staff, and will be accompanied by a document
entitled "Putting the Case for Asbestos". Bo T. fc N. companies
hare yet published pamphlets tailored to their own requirements
on the Health problem. The British Friction Materials Cowell
are to publish a document dealing with tha problems of tha motor
industry; this will cover tho requirements of Ferodo Ltd. and
K-B Ltd.
Tho Docks
The A.R.C. has sent its comments on the preliminary draft of the Docks Regulation* to K.M. Factory Inspectorate. It haa requested that (a) the new regulations should make it clear that they refer to asbestos in loose fibrous form and are not intended to refer to asbestos products in general and Cb] asbestos should not be included in the list of Dangerous Goods. Tha A.R.C. is at present considering a droit Cede, of Practice which would be im plemented in the Docks pending new regulations. Dccosualisstion and tho labour problems stemming from its Introduction seem temporarily to have diverted attention from asbestos.

Architecture and Building
Tlia A.l.C. document rebutting Urn "Loads memorandum" circulated to University building officers has achieved its uiijoet in some quarters, o.g. at Um University of Sussex, but not at others, o.g. the University of Colchester. Disturb ingly, references to the "Leeds memorandum" appear sporadi cally in places, like the Kewcastlo Regional Hospital Board and the Borough Council of Kensington and Chelsea, quite outside the orbit of the Universities. Snergetie action is taken when ever the A. I. C. is made aware of this happening to place its rebuttal dooument in the right bands.
The Department of Education and Sciatica have now written to the few education authority architects known to have misunder stood their circular on the use of asbestos in laboratories and workshops, but In doing so have referred than to H.M. Factory Inspectorate for guidance on the health risk associated with the use of ssbestos products for building.
Customers
Dr. Gate and l met the psrsonnelj enginsertng and medical representative* of L.C.L on bohalf ci ths asbestos industry, and established that the l.C.L policy lr to specify alternatives to asbestos for Insulation purposes whenever possible, bat that this policy deas not officially extend to the use of asbestos pro- duets for building applications. There is seme evidence however that there is some discrimination against asbestos products for . building si lower levels In tha regions. 8.P. Chemicals Cods/ of Practice is on simitar lines to tha A.R.C. Code, but usn*cestarUysevere on. asbestos cloth lagging.' We have not yet succeeded la having a sight of ths CEGB, Shell Chemicals or ; Metal Box Codaa. The Albright and Wilson medical 'officer' baa suggested, inthe Company's house magazine, that any employes*: who work with asbestos should fly* up smoking.
Parliamentary
The A.1.C, meeting with Members of Parliament at the House of Commons has been postponed, due to tha Ulaesa of Alderman Jack McCann, C.B.E., M.P., until 30th January.
T.U.C-
Tfae Report of the Annual Meeting of the T.U.C. contained 4 speeches by Union leaders, all of them disturbing. We ahull consider the possibility of an A.l.C. meeting with Union leaders and the T.U.C. medical advissO, Dr. Murray, in tha near future.

British Occupational Hygiene Society
The report of tho British Occupetional Hygiene Society on whieh it is thought the Ministry of Labour will largely roly as a guide to what they should accept under the proposed new Regulations, la to be published soon. Dr. J. F. Knox and Dr. S. Holmes of T.B.A. were members of the Committee which prepared this report. Tho recommendations are very strict by international standards being based mainly on the best conditions in the T.B.A. Rochdale factory.
The A.R.C. has undertaken, at the request of the A.I.C., to engage in a formal programme ot investigation of airborne asbestos duet in buildings comprising asbestos materials. T.A.C. Co. Ltd. is also doing laboratory work in this field and to determine whether asbestos-cement pressure pipes release asbestos fibres into water supplies. Very highly skilled electron microscopy is also being dene by T.B.A. laboratories to try to determine the asbestos content in the general urban . atmosphere.
