Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration Room 208, Federal Building Tyler, TX 75702 Dear Mr. Holder: Some two months ago, we received an extension for abatement of a Silica Dust"problem. Since that time, we have made numerous tests in an effort to determine the location of the source of the contamination. These tests have been taken, both with the plant in operation and the plant being shut down except for man cooling. The results of the tests indicate that we are picking up the silica and bringing it in through the man cooling system. Having determined where the contaminant is entering, we are now trying to locate the source outside the plant. This outside source could be almost anywhere. Using outside labs to analyze the"samples-taken during the test, time is again running against us. It is for this time factor that we are again having to ask for an additional 120 days. With this 120 day extension, we feel that the source can be located. It is hoped that by the end of this second extension, the abatement plan can be established, and approved. During this extension, the individuals have *and will be required (as they were during the inspection) to wear approved respirators during operations.
