Painting Reminders A quick method of estimating the area of a building to be painted is to multiply the distance around it by its height at comers. Add to this area the area of gables deter mined by multiplying their width by half their height. Also add areas under eaves, porch surfaces, etc., but do not subtract for windows or doors. The total will indicate closely the actual area to be painted. To determine the number of gallons of paint required per coat, divide the total area of the building by 800. One of the most important steps in a suc cessful paint job is proper preparation of the surface to be painted. Exterior surface should be examined carefully and repaired where there is any possibility of water seeping through to the back of clapboards or where wood has rotted away. Old paint showing any peeling or blistering tendency should be com pletely removed by scraping or burning. In terior surfaces should be dry and all cracked plaster surfaces should be repaired with patching cement before paint is applied. Exterior surfaces need 3 coats on new work --a priming coat, a body coat, and a gloss or finish coat. Over old work, 2 coats at least are needed--a prime coat and a gloss or fin ish coat. Dry weather is the best painting weather.
