Markham Pete Volpe Joe Cantrell A review of the Supervisory Safety Committee minutes prompted a discussion concerning the recommendation that a safety standard be established for handling asbestos and asbestos-containing material. Mr. Markham presented a standard or procedure his department would be foilwing in handling asbestos. The Plastic Company also has a standard issued by the Engineering Department concerning the purchase of any material containing asbestos to be used in the Plastic Company. Mr. John Gore has such a standard for the Celanex area. All of these procedures are well written and will be followed by the respective departments. This committee feels that the responsibility for safe handling of asbestos rests with the responsible supervisor, and that a safety permit for handling asbestos would not be required. Supervision would follow the requirements of the OSHA standard or its own depart mental regulations that are based upon the OSHA requirements. The Committee is in full agreement with the Supervisory Safety Committee on the subject of contractors not being permitted to contaminate any area in the plant with asbestos fibers where employees are working (i.e. the cutting of transite). Plant Engineering, Chemical Company, will advise Chemical Purchasing by letter of certain requirements that must be met before purchasing any asbestos-containing material. Item One: The Committee discussed the plant's physical examination program. Pulmonary function tests and chest x-rays are now required yearly for employees engaged in the handling of asbestos. Approval was given to include these tests * 001334 -2 - Item two: Item Three: Item Four: Item Five: Item Six: in the annual and bi-annual physical examinations. A program will be worked out to provide these tests on a yearly basis so that one physical a year will provide all the necessary physical tests required by Federal statutes, as well as our present physical exam requirements. Plant Engineering was asked to study and recommend a method for preventing personnel from falling into the BOD ponds, or provide a method of escape if falls into the ponds* should occur. Engineering was asked to survey the plant (Chemical-and Plastics) for the number and location of high voltage lines crossing plant roadways . These high voltage lines should be marked with the "Span Guard" line markers. The Committee feels this will assist mobile equipment operators to detect overhead lines and help the operator to determine the proximity of their equipment boom to the lines. A. The Committee discussed locations and plans for the installation of women's rest rooms in the Plant. No major problems are associated with the project. B. Departments wishing to take pictures in the plant are required to submit to Plant Protection, by letter, names of employees who are authorized to take cameras into the Plant. Authorization is by the Plant Managers of the respective Companies. The item concerning actions in dealing with vapor clouds, should they occur in the plant, was overlooked and will be discussed in next month's meeting. A brief discussion was held concerning the hiring of women in Production and Maintenance, and possible safety problems which may be encountered with this program No other business. Meeting adjourned.
