MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT - AUGUST 1969 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DEPART* ^TT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION
^ECnET - CO!!PA!TY CONFIDENTIAL
I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook)
A. Felts & Papers
Gaskets
A neoprene latex asbestos gasketing formulation has been developed in the laboratory to meet the properties of the commercial Armstrong sheet. A test run will be scheduled. A plant trial was made of rollboard (laminated asbestos paper) that has lower density and in creased flexibility which should make this product more competitive.
Asbestos Flooring Felt
A second trial shipment of flooring felt was ordered by national Flooring Corporation in Alabama. This customer requires that the sheet not weave when unwound from the roll and R&D checks at Erie on the lot shipped indicate the product should meet this specification.
A second trial run of flooring felt employing Carey 7-i* asbestos in place of the Johns-Hanvilie 7-M fiber ran well and had acceptable physical properties. Ten rolls were sent to Whitehall for eval uation and approva1.
B. Automotive
A machine run of a moldable bituminous mastic sheet was made em ploying a new formulation to achieve higher impact strength. The material is undergoing physical and sound tests and if it meets re quirements, a molded, Fisher Body, rear quarter sample will be pre pared for examination by General Motors.
C. Insulation
Calsilite plant trials are being conducted with a new lower purity diatomaceous earth which has shown promise in the laboratory and production test batches. If acceptable, the savings would amount to approximately $30,000 per year. The longer runs will make it poss ible to determine whether product density or strength are adversely affected.
R&D trials have also established that Calsilite dry scrap can be used up to 5% in the formulation without any detrimental affect on physical properties. The scrap, however, must be pulverized in a manner that retains its fibrous nature. r'aste treated through the hammer-mill at Erie indicates this can be achieved and the equipment required at Gloucester is being investigated. Raw material savings would be $16,000 per year and the hauling away of waste would be greatly reduced.
