sub;ec! 1977 Managers1 Meeting
location location Portland date December 14, 1976
We are going to hold our 1977 Gypsum Division Sales and Plant Managers' Meeting as a combined affair which we hope will result in a better interchange of information and ideas.
The meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel near the airport at Kansas City, Missouri on Monday, January 31, and Tuesday, February 1. Reservations will be made in your name for arrival on Sunday, January 30, and you should be free to leave by late afternoon on Tuesday, February 1. If you desire to stay over for a Wednesday morning departure, I would ask that you advise Jim Hurd so that we can make arrangements for you in advance.
As we finalize more of the details we will keep you informed, but I did want to give you as much advance notice as possible so that you could arrange your schedule to attend.

Vice President's Trophy for 1976 --
It gives me a great deal of pleasure to announce the winner of the Vice President's Trophy for 1976. Based on the greatest number of man-hours worked without experiencing a lost-time injury. Nova Scotia is our winner. Nova Scotia, on August 1, completed 14 years (since their start-up in 1962) without a lost-time injury. Through December 31, 1976, they have worked 1,976,462 man-hours in establishing this record, A very special congratulation to each and every employee at Nova Scotia for this truly outstanding safety achievement.
Injury Summary --
During the year 1976, we experienced a total of 253 medical cases which ' required a doctor's attention and were recordable under OSHA standards. From these 253 medical cases, we lost 2,243 work days. (Lost work days under OSHA standards also include days of restricted work activity.)

Injury Summary (cont'd) --
In 1975, we experienced 278 medical cases. From these, we lost 1,366 work days.
Based on the number of man-hours worked, our OSHA Incident Rate decreased from 15.23 in 1975 to 12.07 in 1976. (Our Division Incident Rate for 1977 as established by our OSHA Standards is 7.48.)
Lost-time injuries increased from 53 in 1975 to 76 in 1976. This resulted in an increase in our frequency rate from 14.52 in 1975 to 18.13 in 1976. (As our 1977 monthly statistical report will no longer reflect ANSI statistical data, we did not establish frequency standards. We will, however, continue to show a frequency rate on the report based on OSHA statistical data, '"his frequency rate will be based on lost work day cases which will not include days of restricted work activity.)
Our 1976 industrial injury experience was somewhat less than good, with little improvement realized from our 1975 experience.
1977 will be a challenging year for all of us. If we are to meet that challenge, each operation must analyze in detail its 1976 injury experience and establish meaningful programs to control injury problem areas. From the 253 case study attached, we find that 577. of our industrial accidents during 1976 involved the eyes, back, fingers and hands. If you will recall, these are the same three parts of the body that were involved in 627. of our 1975 industrial accident cases. I would, therefore, request that each operation key in on these target areas again in your 1977 safety programs:
1. A good eye protection program;
2. An employee education program on proper lifting techniques;
3. Through a study of finger and hand accidents, make a concentrated effort to control and eliminate this type of injury;
4. Strict enforcement of safety rules and regulations.
If you need or desire assistance in setting up your 1976 safety programs, please contact Hank Peele in the Eastern Region or Jack Brandrup in the Western Region. I am also available if I can be of assistance.

It is again time to take a look at our needs for temporary summer employees to relieve for vacations, etc. We have been receiving several applications from junior and senior students in Mining Engineering throughout the mid-west.
Please consider employing one or two of these applicants not only as mine or quarry employees, but for any temporary summer job. It is a good chance for us to take a good look at these people as future permanent employees after their graduation.
Please let me know your thoughts on this matter as soon as possible. Thank you.
