Byrom Identifying "In-Place" Asbestos Material Applications When the majority of our plants were built, materials with considerable asbestos content were extensively utilized in heating systems, steam generation and distribution facilities, insulation of process equipment, etc. We recognize : that an organized program for immediate removal and approved material replace ment is economically impractical and a low order of priority since in a static "in-place" stiuation, the material does not ordinarily represent a health hazard. The risk associated with present asbestos applications is in conjunction with the invasion of the material. It is our judgement that, from a risk management and safety program accounta bility standpoint, it is incumbent upon us to identify known asbestos applica tion sites in a manner and with sufficient adequacy as to alert employes who might i have an occasion to intrude upon the material. The purpose of this communication is to formally propose the development of a Cor porate stationery stores asbestos alert form designed to be a combination tag and/or self-sticking decal. The caution legend to be similar in application con text to the electrical power warning decals presently used throughout the Company. ] The decals and tags would have the additional benefit of identifying employe . accountability for program participation and would offer further visual evidence j of an ongoing health and safety program. ti -1 As a further aid in understanding the nature of this proposal, we have attached A a possible asbestos alert decal format.
