Dehn Subject: Vinylidene Chloride ^ f^^cinogenicity } I received a telephone call this afternQon, June 23, from Dr. Jessie Norris of Dow with respect to a report she received from Dow Europe. BASF forwarded to them a draft report from Dr. Thamatas of IARC. IARC is the International Agency for the Research of Cancer which is located in Lyons, France, and supported financially by ten sovereign governments, one of which is the United States. Theyfunction under the auspices of the World Health Organization. In test work done by Dr. Thamatas, he fed mice vinylidene chloride at a dose rate of 70 milligrams/kiIn gram of body weight in olive oil one day a week for 120 weeks. After this long period of time, 19 male and 18 female mice still survived. In the case of the rats, a dose of 150 milligrams/kilogram was fed under a similar protocol. There was a definite increase, statistically valid, of hepatocell_u1ar carcinomas in the mice. In the rats, a different form of'cancer'on"..... the cover of the brain was formed in significant numbers with respect to controls. This' is probahJv a further contributing factor toward NI OSHrs proposed TWA of^O.1 ppm Tor vinylidene. These are high dose levels which Dow felt were sufficient to overcome any detoxification levels or normal metabollic immune systems; however, the facts remain it did on ingestion cause cancer in two species.
