Bourque SUBJECT: Asbestos Materials August 8, 1973 As a result of a recent OSHA inspection.trip to the plant, it appears that our original feeling on requirements for handling and working with materials containing asbestos must be greatly modified. In order to properly protect our people as well as comply with the OSHA provisions, a detailed study is to be made on all phases of asbestos material handling such as storage, installation, repair and replacement, disposal methods and substitute materials available. Some such effort has already been made in specific areas. Some of the results will be applicable to plant wide use. Art Stevenson will coordinate the initial phases of the study. So that a reasonably complete list may be compiled, will each of you furnish to me by August 27 the following information on asbestos containing material used by your people which is not stocked in stores. 1. Brief description of type of material including manufacturer's designation and also supplier. A copy of a purchase order would suffice. 2. What its use is. 3. Approximate quantity used per year. 4. Suggest any possible substitutes. 5. Briefly review any efforts already made toward finding suitable alternates. 6. Any other information -you may feel to be pertinent to the study. If all such material used in your area is stocked in stores or if your people do not use any such material, please indicate this by note so that we can be assured that all areas are covered.
