to Those Listed AT COPIES TO INTER-OFFICE MEMORANL A RECEIVED SEP 2-S-1967 date from cc: L. H. Oppenheim J. E. Hughesj R. J. Wolf 9-25-67 - WFB September 20, 1967 Go L. Roberts J.E. HUGHES subject Kaiser Management Visit to Project '^OO" During the past few days Edgar F. Kaiser, President of Kaiser Industries, honored us with a visit to Project "bOO". He was accompanied by E. E. Trefethen, Executive Vice President of Kaiser Industries; L. H. Oppenheim, Vice President General Manager; Jo E0 Hughes, Vice President Assistant General Manager; W,, F, Bort, Vice President Industrial Construction; and R, J. Wolf, Vice President Steel Projects, on the site job visitation, the meeting with Armco, and the Kaiser award dinner. We were indeed fortunate to have this many top Company officers and Mr. Kaiser and Mr. Trefethen, in particular, normally do not have time to visit a construction job unless it is big and in trouble. This was definitely not the case here and was made quite clear by Mr. Kaiser and the other officers of the Company. This visitation was a distinct high light in try career with Kaiser Engineers and it was a pleasure to represent you under such favorable circumstances. Therefore, this memorandum is written to share with you a few of the comments about the Project and the people building it, along with notes from the management meeting held on Monday. Mr. Kaiser and his staff were visibly impressed by the magnitude, quality, and amount of work that we have accomplished to date. They were most generous in their praise of our ''crew" on this Project and comments in this vein were repeated often. These were words of commendation sincerely offered by people knowledgeable in this business. We could not have merited this praise without a full team effort of Supervision, Engineers, clerical people. Labor Relations, cost engineers. Accounting, and the boys from North Main Street. In our meeting with Mr. Verity, President of Armco, and his staff I was impressed by the excellent relationship we have developed with a client whose success was built on integrity, initiative and know-how as was our Company. Many subjects were discussed in this meeting including schedules, costs and planning. As you know, we have some tight schedules with completion dates that are extremely important to Armco. The Hot Strip Mill is, of course, the schedule of paramount interest at this time with the Slab Mill, Soaking Pits, and Pickle Line following closely. It was noted that we must be very careful with expenditures no matter how small. Future planning included discussions of the Cold Mills that we will start next April and the Bc 0,, F,, that will be in full swing next year. KEN 008826 5 Memorandum to Those Listed Kaiser Management Visit to Project "600" September 20, 1967 Page 2 We were reminded in this meeting by the Management people of both Companies that we must continue to exhibit a sense of urgency and a desire to improve job efficiency. Mr. Bort and I assured them that we were mindful of this important obligation and more than willing to correct attitudes or actions discovered by us or brought to our atten tion by others. At the close of the Armco meeting Mr. Verity stated that his Company would continue to be critical of our performance. I am sure you will agree that this is as it should be in healthy owner-builder relationship. You should also know that both Mr. Kaiser and Mr. Verity were impressed and appreciative of the manner in which our Kaiser Families have become a worthwhile part of the Middletown scene. Let us not pat ourselves on the back too much in this regard though, I think our wives are the ones who deserve most of the praise. What does this all add up to? We, the construction "stiffs", have earned a confidence from our Project Manager, D. A. Daly to the President of the Company and we are not about to lose it. GLR/rrn TO: G. P. Adams A. L. Gordon F.
