It seemed to the Connors Hoe and Tool Company, Inc,, that a new and improved tool handle would find a ready market. Men wh o Ji ad been in the bus\ loess for years, and who knew what a garden tool should be, busied themselves to find a suitable material for handles. After some experimenting a steel tubing was developed which was strong enough for the purpose and of about the same weight as a wood handle. But it had one disadvantage... steel is not kind to the human hand, It 1S hard and unsympathetic- and has a way of heating UP quickly on a hot day, while remaining chilled on a cold day. In all kinds of weather it is uncomfortable. ' Why not cover the steel with some insulating material which would be as easy on the hands as wood? More testing and discarding followed, and then it was found that cork-faced Fabrikoid provided a good, smooth, non-blistering grip and the necessary insulation. The method of applying Fabrikoid to the tubular steel handles is interesting. The material is cut into one-inch strips, then coated with a strong, waterproof adhesive, and wrapped spirally under pressure by a specially de signed machine. A steel ferrule, clamped over the end of the cork, prevents unwinding. That there was a real need for tools with dependable handles has been proved by the growing demand for `'Corksteel'5 products. They are strong and enduring, and cost about the same as similar first-quality tools whh wood handles.
