Scanning-transmission electron photomicrographs taken with our JEOL-1200EX AEM of an actinolite sample from the vicinity of Windham, Vermont, and one from the vicinity of Ludlow, Vermont, are presented on the attached plates. Plate I displays photos of actinolite from the Windham area. All grains examined were cleavage fragments~; grains that would qualify distinctly as asbestlform--i.e, showed broom-tail terminations and curvilinear fibers-were not detected. Grain morphology ranged from low to very-high aspect ratios. Plate II shows photos of actinolite from the Ludlow area. Grains that would qualify distinctly as asbestiform were not detected. Morphologies included low and very-high aspect ratios. This sample seemed to have a lower average aspect ratio than the sample from the Windham area. Both samples will be sent to you in rock form. The rocks are not pure actinolite, but I hope that enough actinolite can be removed in order to suit the needs of the toxicology study.
