Subject:
Pre-Demolition Walk-thru Bldg 187, & #32 Boiler Turbine
Based on the questionnaire and walk-thru inspection of these two areas the following industrial hygiene concerns were- identified:
Bldg 187 - no concerns
Boiler Turbine - A significant amount of asbestos
insulation is present on lines and vessels in the area.
In addition it is uncertain if the refractory in the
boiler itself contains asbestos. Under UCC policies
all asbestos removal is to be conducted in negative
pressure enclosures unless it is either unfeasible to
do so or it is a small scale job. Any contractor
bidding on this job should be made aware of this
policy.
In addition he should be required to provide
an on site industrial hygienist during the asbestos
removal to monitor exposures to contract employees
daily.
The refractory should be sampled to determine if it contains asbestos. The sample should be sent to Dick LaCour in Bldg. 133 for analysis.
As with any asbestos demolition we must assure ourselves that notice is sent to the Galveston County Health Department at least 20 days prior to the date removal is started.
If you have any questions please give me a call.
Sincerely,
kemedemo
