MINUTES 07 MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE GLIDDEN COMPANY Minutes of meeting of the Executive Committee of The Glidden Company held at the office of the Company, 1396 Union Commerce Building, Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, June 27, 1952 at 3t00 P,M, The following members of the Committee were present: Adrian D. Joyce Dwight P. Joyce P. E. Sprague J. A. Peters B. W. Maxey Mr. J. P. Ruth was not present at the meeting. Mr. Adrian D. Joyce, Chairman, presided and Mr. R* D. Horner, Secretary, recorded the minutes. Mr. P. E. Sprague presented the recommendations of the Patent Com mittee for the filing of the following Applications for United States Letters patent which were, upon motion duly made and seconded, unanimously approved by the Committee. 1. 1-217: Resolution of Racemic Menthol with Hydronoptc Acid This development, said Mr. Sprague, related to the use of hydronopic acid, a product developed, manufactured, and patented by the Naval Stores Division, in resolving the levo and dextro forms of menthol. 2. 1-223: Introduction of Oxygen into Ring C of Naked Sterols The importance of this application, said Mr. Sprague, lay in the synthesis of cortisone and related hormones from naked sterols. The new procedure promised to overcome objections to prior art methods based upon low yields and the necessity for using hazardous chemicals. GLD013597 3 Lead Silicate Pigment - A disclosure sheet forming the basic of this application, said Hr. Sprague, had been submitted by Mr. E. D. Turnbull, Chemical Engineer for the Company's Easton Lead Division, and re lated'to a process for preparing lead silicate pigment by reacting silicate with a basic lead acetate solution. Mr. Turnbull's discovery, it vas pointed out, marked the culmination of a long developmental and experimental program. Manufacture of lead silicate pigment, said Mr. Sprague, vhlch, under Mr. Turnbull's process, could be made vithout additional expensive equipment, should provide the Company vith a product capable of competing vith National Lead Company's Pigment U5-X. The Chairman requested that Mr. A. R, Knight, Scranton Division Manager, investigate the market for such lead silicate pigments and submit to him a report on the results of this invest!gation. k. 1-225 and 1-226; Hydrometallurgical Cuprous Oxide Processes Mr. Sprague explained that prior art permitted the manufacture of cuprous oxide vith satisfactory color and purity only through use of electrolytic processes. Hydrometallurgical processes discovered by Mr. j. E. Drapeau, Technical Director at Hammond, he said, vould permit the manufacture of a satisfactory product from a mixture of metallic copper and cuprous oxide using ammonium persulfate or ammonia as a catalyst. Mr. P. E. Sprague submitted a proposal for the construction of a onestory, masonry construction extension to the Company's Soya Products and Peed Mill Divisions offices at Indianapolis. Preliminary estimates, said Mr. Sprague, indicated total cost of construction of approximately betveen $55,000 and $60,000 which vould include provisions for future installation of air conditioning. Preliminary dravings and floor layouts vere presented by Mr. Sprague. The GLD013598 t / fe>3 Committee, following careful consideration and upon motion duly made and seconded, unanimously adopted Mr. Sprague's recommendation that the Indiana polis Divisions be authorized to obtain a precise estimate of the cost of the office project to the Company. Messrs. B. W. Maxey, Comptroller and J. C. Rankin, Division Manager, were authorized to secure all necessary data and obtain final approval of the project by the Executive Committee or the Board of Directors in Mr. Sprague's absence. There being no further business to come before the Committee, the meeting was, upon motion duly made and seconded, unanimously adjourned. GLD013599
