Mundt provided an update on the status of the AEI study. A report on the results of the expanded baseline analysis is expected in the near future. The Panel also reviewed and accepted the revised January '98 protocol for the study at the University of Louisville. W. Sherman will write a letter notifying Dr. Tamburro that the Panel has accepted the study protocol. 2.0 Presentation on the Molecular Dosimetry of Vinyl Chloride Dr. J. Swenberg and A. Ham presented their vinyl chloride molecular dosimetry research to the Panel. Dr. Swenberg also briefed the group on the status of the vinyl chloride case study being undertake at the International Life Sciences Institute. After the presentation, Panel members accompanied Dr. Swenberg on a tour of his laboratory at the University of North Carolina. The Panel will provide a gift to support Dr. Swenberg's research according to the following schedule: $50,000 in 1998 and $25,000 in CMA 171359 VCHC Record of Conference Call -1 /8/98 Page 2 1999. W. Sherman will draft a letter to Dr. Swenberg regarding the gift; the Panel asked to review the draft letter. 3.0 Update on the Huntingdon Life Sciences Study W. Sherman reported that the final developmental study was submitted to ATSDR in January 1998. According to the terms of the MOU, the reproductive study portion of the study is due in July 1998. W. Sherman will ask R. Schroeder to suggest journals for publication of the developmental and reproductive study manuscripts. W. Sherman will send the final Huntingdon reports to Cal EPA in support of the Panel's Recommended Exposure Level comments. 4.0 Update on the EPA's IRIS Pilot Project C. Norman briefed the Panel on the status of EPA's IRIS Pilot Project with vinyl chloride. According to EPA staff, after the states and regions have reviewed the draft database, the information is expected to be updated within a few weeks. During future IRIS updates, the Panel suggested that EPA incorporate a public review and comment period on the draft revised database. W. Sherman will ask EPA for information on criteria used to select peer reviewers. 5.0 Discussion of Future VCHC Activities * During a review of the VCHC activities list, members noted that most of the Committee's major research projects were scheduled for completion by the end of 1998. In anticipation of a reduced research schedule and with a focus on providing technical support for advocacy and product stewardship activities at the Vinyl Institute (VI), the Committee discussed moving future VCHC-type activities to the VI. Over the next three weeks. Committee members will talk to their respective company VI representatives about the feasibility of such a move; W. Sherman will speak with F. Borrelli.
