To Safety Directors From Tom Grumbles Date February 4, 1983 Subject EXECUTIVE PHYSICALS/VAN TESTING PROGRAM
The question of whether or not the van testing physical can suffice for an executive physical for those who are eligible has been raised many times. As the van testing "season" approaches, the question will probably be asked again. Attached is a letter from Dr. Drumwright addressing this issue. Basically, it is the Medical Department's opinion that the van physical can serve as the executive physical for those eligible, with the exception of the treadmill stress test, which would have to be obtained elsewhere.

Dr. Whetstone has requested that I respond to your recent inquiry concern ing the Executive Physical Examination Program. It is my pleasure to do so.
The periodic or executive-type physical examination is offered to super visory, technical, and administrative employees throughout Conoco Inc., its subsidiaries and affiliates who have been nominated by their respec tive department managers. The list of eligible employees is reviewed annually and the Medical Division works closely with the department man agers to maintain uniformity.
As long as the employee is renominated, the periodic examination is offered every other year to participants under age forty and annually if forty years of age or older.
The scope of the examination includes a complete review of occupational exposures, family and personal history, and a thorough review of systems. Laboratory studies include a complete blood count (CBC), urinalysis, blood chemistry profile, blood pressure, height and weight, and Hemoccult slides, etc. The chest x-ray is offered annually to smokers and every two years to nonsmokers. A resting electrocardiogram is performed annually with a cardiac stress test performed initially at age thirty-five, repeated at age forty, and every other year until forty-six, then yearly thereafter. (Should symptoms indicate, a more appropriate schedule will be established.) Tests for vision (near, distant, and color, etc.) and screening tests for pulmonary function (FVC and FEV,) and glaucoma are offered annually.
The employee who is nominated to participate in this examination program may be located at one of the many sites throughout Conoco, where either the mobile type-multiphasic, or other similar "in-house" programs such as Chocolate Bayou offers, are available. In such cases, the Medical Division strongly advises that the eligible employee participate in one of these programs as the scope of these exams is essentially identical to that of the periodic examination. The one major difference would be the treadmill or stress test. This test, and any or all others as advised by the examining physician, could be obtained elsewhere. The "hands on" portion and discussion of the results of the examination may be done in the office of an approved physician for instance.

There are many advantages to having an executive participate in the local multiphasic program. Among these are less time away from the job, decreased cost, and convenience. Also, improved participation of plant employees in these programs frequently occurs when they see that the plant professionals, supervisors, and managers have confidence in these programs and elect to participate at the work site.
It remains the option of each employee as to when he or she will have the examination performed (with certain boundaries, of course), but there are many recognized benefits to local plant participation, where possible, and this certainly should be encouraged.
an provide additional assistance or clarification.
