SPILLER, ETSO, AROMATICS, DEEP. PARK MANUFACTURING COMPLEX SUBJECT: REMODELING BEU AND PLAT-2 CONTROL ROOMS As per our previous discussion of 01-04-90. It is my understanding that the two existing ceilings in Plat-2 control room will be left in place with a new ceiling installed below the existing ceilings. Due to the fact that one of the existing ceilings in Plat-2 control room is made of asbestos-containing transite the following procedures should be followed: A. Be familiar with Shell's Asbestos, Safety order S-125. B. Cutting or drilling of asbestos-containing transite should be treated as Incidental Asbestos Work* (see definition below). C. Avoid generating any dust while removing the old ceiling tiles in the BEU control room, handle in wet stage whenever practical, or contain dust to the specific area involved. The ceiling tiles in the BEU control room do not contain asbestos fibers, however the dust on top of the ceiling tiles may create a dust problem. E.f Asbestos area monitoring will be conducted by Industrial Hygiene intermittently during the time of remodeling in both control rooms. ^Incidental Asbestos Work - Short duration work tasks (less than one hour) with asbestos-containing materials where asbestos exposures are not expected to exceed the PEL. LAM 013903 DPMC-15172 Also included in the remodeling job at BEU will be some excavation on the north side of the control room to install underground plumbing. The excavation area will be treated initially as a "Benzene Regulated Area" until otherwise advised (Refer to Benzene Safety Order S-131). The area will be deregulated after tests confirms that there is no benzene exposures in the area. All personnel involved in the excavation should be respirator fit tested prior to working inside the Benzene Regulated Area. Respiratory protection should be in compliance with .
